Hungarian Army

VR designs has been reinforced with designer Cameron Harris and the result is a revolutionary new operational war game 'Barbarossa' that plays like none other. It blends an advanced counter pushing engine with deep narrative, people management and in-depth semi-randomized decision systems.

Hungarian Army

Post by ChuckBerger »

3rd in my series of "fixing AGS" posts...

The Hungarians: true, the initial commitment of Hungarian troops to Barbarossa was around 40,000 men, called the "Carpathian Group". This would justify the 2 divisions currently shown in game. However, very early on - as early as 8 July - the infantry components of this force were assigned to rear-area security and administrative duties. The "Carpathian Group" was dissolved, and for the rest of the campaign, only the "Rapid Corps" operated as a front-line combat unit.

The Rapid Corps consisted of 2 motorised brigades and one cavalry brigade, about 25,000 troops in total include support units. Further, the unit was "mechanised" only by comparison to other Hungarian units, it certainly wasn't the equivalent of a fully mechanised German division. There is an argument for making them more analogous to the Italian "motorised" divisions, which are called motorised but function simply as infantry in the game.

The Rapid Corps fought well at Uman and Kiev, and continued despite heavy losses until withdrawn in November 1941 back to Hungary. In game terms, it can probably be left in for the duration, on the assumption that if it doesn't suffer heavy losses (as it did historically), it could still be available for use.

In game terms, the Hungarians might best be represented as a single hybrid infantry/cavalry division with a unique OOB including, say, 5000 hungarian infantry, 3000 hungarian cavalry, 50 PzII, and the usual smattering of artillery and AT. This would be a infantry unit, not a "fast" division consuming fuel, but with the light tanks and cavalry would still pack a fair punch.

It should be assigned to 17th Army, not 1PzG. Part of the trouble currently with assigning 2 Hungarian divisions to 1PzG is that they then benefit from powerful commander, focus and Luftwaffe bonuses, which lead to them having capabilities beyond what they were actually capable of.

A single reinforced infantry division assigned to 17th army would avoid that problem - and if it's a "slow" division, you don't have problems with fuel accounting etc. But even if you keep it as a "fast" division, it would work just like the Romanian panzer division. Assigning it to 1 PzG makes it too strong.

Hi ChuckBerger,

Some comprehensive AGS research here.

The Hungarians are probably the hardest of all to adapt to the game system.

Mmmm...

Cheers,
Cameron
