SOW: Waterloo Not Working on Steam

Post by sp9447 »

Hi

I purchased SOW: Waterloo via Steam last night, installed Steam then downloaded game. It has added the game to my Steam Library and a desktop to shortcut to the game as well. When I try the shortcut, or press 'play' in Steam, it opens a dialog box with the title 'Scourge of War: Waterloo CD Key’ and gives me a product code and 2 buttons labelled 'Copy Key to Clipboard' and 'Play'. I have tired pressing copy to clipboard and then play or just pressing play but, whatever I do the dialog closes and nothing happens. And I mean nothing. I have used task manager to see if I get any response at all and, no matter how long I leave it, no processes start up if I go through trying to start the game (and I have tried it numerous times now). My version of Steam is up to date and I have used the product key I was given to register the game on the Slitherine site (which it accepted). Any ideas on what I can try next to get this game working? Thanks.

Try running Steam as administrator:

Hi, thanks for your quick response.

I tried running Steam as an Administrator (followed the article and used this on the steam.exe file not the shortcut as instructed) but no change. I then used the 'Browse Local Files' option within Steam (image attached) to find the actual game .exe file as the desktop shortcut to game itself (ie not steam) would not allow me the option to run as administrator. Once I found the game exe file I ran this as an administrator and, although the game still won't run, I did at least get an error message dialog box this time. This error message states that the d3dx9_43.dll file is missing. I think this is to do with DirectX 9 and I did try to install this earlier after reading another post on this forum where a person was having problems running the game but the installer just won't run on Windows 10. Any other ideas??

Tried this?

The installer should run in Win10 because it worked for other Win10. If it doens't run what error gives you?

Hi people
I am trying to run the game on a new Lenovo gaming laptop (Y700 Gaming Ideapad). The game loads and the start screen appears but crashes when I try to start a SP game. I have reviewed and followed the instructions in this thread, namely setting the compatibility to Windows 7, checking the recommended boxes (run as administrator, etc,) uninstalled and reinstalled the game and updated it via the update function on the start screen.
Same result, game crashes, the windows message stating, Waterloo has stopped working.

Are there any new tips or workarounds to fix this?

Thanks!

Download DirectX9 file installer:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download ... px?id=8109

Run and extract it to a folder of your choice. Open that folder and find a file named "DXSETUP.exe". Run and let it install a full version of DirectX9c.

Well I am back.

Game was running fine after loading the Direct 9X file and VPaulus suggested. Now, this afternoon, when I load the game, start screen appears. When I click SP, OK. When I click tutorial the first message I get is X-Level not found. I hit select retry I get this: X-Cannot open heightfield TGA, when I click retry for this, I then get X-E out of memory and the game then aborts.

Any experience with this issue (am running Windows 10 on a Y700 Lenevo Ideapad with plenty of CPU and graphics horsepower (or so I thought anyway).

>X-Level not found

This is a error linked to map loading. In the sandbox screen how many maps are shown to you? I suspect somehow your installation lost the registration. Try to uninstall, rename\delete the directory SOWWL which is under documents and reinstall, executing the game; it forces the creation of a new SOWWL and the check file of registration. After you can copy files like sowwl.ini, keyboards.csv and the various saves from the old one inside the new one.
