Japanese war films
I just read another thread, asking if we have any Japanese players in here who play UV..This is off the topic, but related..
A few years ago,I saw a movie made in Japan called"Zero"..It was historically accurate in that it showed how the Mitsubishi type 00 "trounced" the allied planes at the beginning of the war,and had some decent mock-ups representing planes in the movie.(Betty,P-38,P-40,Hellcat,etc)..
Does anybody recall seeing this film, because I have not been able to find it for sale anywhere,(I have looked)...
Has anybody seen any other Japanese produced war films?
I recall seeing some back in the early '60's,(dubbed into English),but can't remember the titles..

Zero
Hi, LOL. I often use this movie as my choice for worst ever war movie. Made by the people who also did Godzilla.
Best line from movie "Zero" "This war kills every body"
Watch for the 1984 Datsun truck driving down the runway
Try WWW.StompTokyo.com They have reviews and you can order movies.

You are right about the Datsun truck, but I don't think it's any worse than "Patton" with M47 and M48's..
If you think "Zero" is one of the worst, you must have never seen "El Alamein"?????
In one scene, the Italian forces are being attacked by a Scots unit, and the "bagpipes" are actually the sounds produced by a kids' toy organ!!!!!!!!!!!!!(At least it did have some real Italian tanks!..)....But folks, picking the movies apart is off the purpose of my thread?????Nicht Wahr??

According to my dad, my grandfather, a Russian expatriate living in Tokyo with his family during WW2, was asked to be the "evil American pilot strafing Red Cross trucks" in a wartime movie of some sort.
Why? Well, because he was obviously not Japanese.
He declined, because, well, he felt like immigrating to the US after the war, and didn't think being in a propaganda film would help.
I'm sure this story has mutated somewhat over time, but there's got to be some truth in it.

I love it when a plan comes together.

Hi, Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. However you asked
If anyone had seen it, and where you could buy it.
The models used in this film are excellent (as are the models used in almost every movie made by this film company.)
The funniest scenes are the training excercises. (LOL, my eyes water just thinking about it)

Konpeki no Kantai
There is a long ( 20 + episode ) Japanese anime OAV ( Original Animation Video ) series called "Konpeki no Kantai"/"Deep Blue Fleet" that is an alternate world story of Japan winning against the US and going to war against Nazi Germany.
The gist of the story is that some Japanese officers who die at the end of the war find themselves resurrected prior to the start of the War, with their knowledge intact. So they stage a coup d-etat, break the alliance with Germany, but declare war on the US anyway. However, since they lived through the war, they know of the technologies that were developed, and develop and field "super weapons" that defeat the US. They then get involved in a world war against Germany.
I'm not sure that the series has ended even yet - it's been coming out sporadically since the early 90's, and got a big revival on Japanese anime TV stations and DVD release last year. It hasn't been professionally translated into English, and I'm not sure if it's been fan-subbed either. (That's not too much of a problem for me - go nen mae kara, nihongo no benkyo shite imasu)
It's an interesting "what if" story, none-the-less, particularly for war gamers. It addresses the long held US theory that there was no way that the Japanese could have won the war, and comes up with a very Japanese solution.

There are a couple "war" movies that I have seen. I saw the "The Burmese Harp" in college. It takes place towards the very end of the war and the protaganist is left for dead, and he goes about burying all the Japanese war dead after he gets taken in by a Buddhist Priest.
The other one was "Fires on the Plain" - can't remember where it was - either New Guinea or the Phillipines and the Japanese are in full retreat with no supplies. Think Donner Party but in the SW Pacific.
Both of these films were made during the "Golden Age of Japanese Cinema" - read 1950's-early 1960's. Definitely pretty serious stuff, no Godzillas or Nissan Trucks!

Some googling for "Deep Blue Fleet" turns up netizens rather annoyed at the unrealism and anti-American jingoism of Deep Blue Fleet.
I guess its one of those "for domestic consumption only" anime.
That's pretty much true. It is pretty didactic and jingoistic, but no worse that your average US Rambo-style action flick. There have been other recent Japanese sci-fi anime that have placed the US as, if not the outright "bad guy"such as in "Brain Powerd", then certainly not "on the side of the angels",
There is another recent very interesting "post war" Japanese movie called "Battle Royale" that is set in the modern world, but one in which Japan beat the US in WWII. So society in Japan has developed slightly harsher, and in order to "educate" what are considered to be insubordinate teenagers, every so often a class of high school seniors are kidnapped at random by the Government, brought to a deserted island, get explosive necklaces locked around their necks, and are ordered to kill each other. If they don't kill all but one in five days, the survivors will be killed. The survivor gets to be a media celebrity of sorts.
The movie is a black comedy of sorts, and of course a harsh criticism of modern Japanese society, but at the same time it is quite engrossing in a hyperviolent way.

I highly recommend "Fires on the Plain". An excellent 1959 anti-war film by Kon Ichikawa. I saw it first when I was a tennager, and was mesmerized by it. Very disturbing, yet highly engrossing. Here's what REEL.COM has to say about it:The other one was "Fires on the Plain" - can't remember where it was - either New Guinea or the Phillipines and the Japanese are in full retreat with no supplies. Think Donner Party but in the SW Pacific.
Disturbing, fiercely downbeat tale of Japanese soldiers experiencing hellish conditions during WWII. Superb cinematography, graphic realism make this a masterpiece of anti-war cinema. Highly recommended for strong-stomached foreign film fans.

Yeah, but you may find the Japanese you've been studying for the past five years isn't the same Japanese they are speaking in those anime. Still, every bit helps.
