Unkown Sound Error

Post by 8thHUSSAR »

Hi All,
I have been playing the game for many months with no problems.
Recently it crashed with the dialog error message, “Unknown Sound Error”
This error now appears when trying to start the game from the “Play CC – Gateway to Caen” tab. The following error shows. . “Unknown Sound Error”.
I also have CC V Invasion Normandy loaded and is still playable.
Please help.
Thanks
System.. Acer Aspire Intel i3, W7 Home Prem SP1, Intel HD graphics

Does the error still recur after a reboot of the PC?

Cheers

Hi Pip

I've uninstalled the original downloaded form of the game.
I've loaded the game from the DVD, played about 5 individual battles with no problems.
Today, half way through a battle,I paused with F3, and then tried to continue the game crashed with the same error message.

Close Combat using DirectX calls (DirectSound to be precise) to play sounds, and in this case the "Unknown Error" is coming back from DirectX.

Since this just started happening, I suspect it may be some change with your system that is the cause. I would suggest reinstalling DirectX as a first step. You may also want to temporarily disable any anti-virus or sound-related software you have recently installed on the machine, just to see if they are the cause.

The only other case of this error I can recall was from a user who was getting it consistently, and the error went away when they ran the game 'As Administrator' (by right clicking CCE.EXE in Windows explorer.) But this was on an older version of Windows and an older version of the game as well, so I doubt it will apply here.

hi Steve. . .

thanks for your help'

I've reloaded the game, installed Dx9 with Dx11 already installed and set up as administrator.

The sound error is still pressent when using pause through F3.
When I use Esc to effectively cause a game pause, its OK and continues after Esc reselection.

Any thoughts ??

8thHussar,

So the error originally occurred every time you tried to start the game, but now it only happens when you hit the F3 key to pause a battle? That is odd. F3/pause does suspend the game sounds, but I don't know why this would start failing suddenly.

I would check for updated drivers for your sound card / system. It could also be a problem with the sound hardware itself, though I don't know what sort of diagnostics you might have for this. Do you regularly play other games on this computer and do they ever have any sound-related issues?
