1920 x 1080 problem

Post by toddtreadway »

I have the game set to use the system resolution, and it defaults back to a lower resolution (not sure what it is...still high, but there are black borders on the side). I then did a custom resolution and it did the same thing, although it says it is using 1920 by 1080.

Maybe the game doesn't work in widescreen mode?

Could you please attach a DxDiag report file to your message?

How to get a DxDiag report file:

1. Click on "START" (on Windows 8/10 press “Windows key” and the “R” key at the same time)
2. Click "run" (skip this step on Windows 8/10)
3. Type in "dxdiag" and click "OK"
4. Check through the tabs and perform all tests
5. Click "Save all Information..." and save the text file to a location of your choice
6. Attach the file to your message

I am sorry that you are not able to play the game properly. The game's actual maximum resolution is 2560 x 1600. But it will try to reset your monitor to a workable resolution if it can. It doesn't seem to be able to find a resolution that it likes. It should have been able to find one but apparently it could not.

The game doesn't care about the aspect ratio per se, by the way.

OK, assuming that your monitor will be happy with 1920 x 1080, here is something to try first. As a preliminary, start the game and restore the "Take Settings from Display Panel" choice. Then quit the game. Now, set your desktop resolution to 1920 x 1080 and set the refresh rate of your monitor to 60 Hz. This will be done in the Display control panel or with a utility supplied by the Graphics Software like NVIDIA Settings. Now start the game and it should be happy.

If this doesn't work, then please try the following: 1) Keep your desktop resolution at the target setting for the time being. 2) Delete your prefs.dat file from the game's User Data folder. This will be just plain "prefs" if you don't have your file extensions showing. 3) Start the game up. (Deleting the preferences file will simply reset the prefs back to a default state and makes sure that we are using the defaults).

If all of this still doesn't work, can you please upload the game log? It's also in the game's User Data folder and is named Napoleon Game Log.txt (you won't see the .txt if your file extensions are hidden, of course). And can you please also upload the Display_Info file from Use Data folder as well. This will help me to diagnose your problem. Thanks!

Thanks in advance for your patience while we are solving this problem.

Thanks for the help! Here are the files. I tried what you suggested, Mercenarius, but the game seems to keep reverting to a slightly lower resolution than 1920 x 1080.

Try the following:

Open the game installation folder. Find and select a file named Napoleon.exe. Press the right mouse button and select Properties. Click on the Compatibility tab. Tick the option Disable display scaling on high DPI settings. Click on Apply and OK. Double click on Napoleon.exe for running the game and check if the issue is persisting.

Tried that and still the narrower display. FYI, when I exited the game to write this message, the display switches back to 1920 x 1080, but then when I Alt-Tab back into the game, it switches back to the narrower display with the black borders on the edge (I think 1680x 1050).

I tried changing the settings and restarting the game, even restarting the computer...no luck.

Open the Nvidia Control Panel and locate Manage 3D Settings. Change, in both Global and Program, the Preferred Graphics Processor to High Performance NVIDIA Processor.

Tried that one, VPaulus, and still same result. The game runs fine, and I am loving every second of it! Just the borders on the sides.... I really am having a ball with it though!!!

Then try the other way, set the Intel integrated graphics as the preferred graphic chip.

I think that the game might be failing certain performance checks it performs and is falling back on 1680 x 1050. Could you try to send the game log to me via PM? That will show what resolutions it tried to set up. The Display_Info file is showing that it's running at 1680 x 1050.

The log file is called - surprise - Napoleon Game Log. (Or Napoleon Game Log.txt with file extensions showing).

I'll post a hotfix for this as soon as I can. I don't know if that will be through Matrix or on Steam. But I'll try to get something which will resolve this issue for you.

Thanks for your patience!

Hi Todd,

After looking at the log I can see that the game doesn't think that it can run well enough at 1920 x 1080, so it is moving down to 1680 x 1050.

I will start working on a hotfix for this. I'll need to coordinate with Matrix Games how it should be delivered. The hotfix will be set up so that you can override the performance checks and force the game to use the resolution you specify.

Thanks for your patience, and for posting the log file. I'll update this topic as soon as I have the hotfix ready.

I did want to mention that the game may be getting the correct result: it's possible that your graphics card isn't performing well enough. At least it might not be performing well enough with "Napoleon." We'll see what happens when I get the hotfix ready.

Todd, do you have a Matrix or a Steam copy of the game?

Steam version. It would be odd that the graphics card isn't up to snuff. I have the most modern laptop graphics card available, the Nvidia 980M.

Thanks for helping!
