OT: Do you guys read at all?

Post by MagnusOlsson »

I would like to bring some enlightenment to the forum and recommend the novel 'Cryptonomicon' by Neal Stephenson. It is well worth reading, and has it's own website:

http://www.cryptonomicon.com/

There's a lot of ww2 in it, so it's not entirely ot :-).

"Let's set the existence-of-god issue aside for a later volume, and just stipulate that in some way, self-replicating organisms came into existence on this planet and immediately began trying to get rid of each other, either by spamming their environments with rough copies of themselves, or by more direct means which hardly need to be belabored. Most of them failed, and their genetic legacy was erased from the universe forever, but a few found some way to survive and to propagate. After about three billion years of this sometimes zany, frequently tedious fugue of carnality and carnage,"

"You keep all your smart modern writers,
Give me William Shakespeare.
You keep all your smart modern painters,
I'll take Rembrandt, Titian, daVinci, and Gainesborough."

"...sometimes zany, frequently tedious fugue of carnality and carnage," indeed. Yes, some of us do read, much to the astonishment, I suppose, of those who feel a duty to bring "enlightenment" to the forum. Good god a'mighty, a few blokes 'ere e'en right well knows their alphabets, bejazus, and pens 'im a stanza er two!
Put my faith in the people
And the people let me down.
So, I turned the other way,
And I carry on anyhow.

Reading???

No time to learn that left since I have to convince my girl friend again and again to type all these subtile posts for me.

She believes I should be able to do that myself...

Can someone help me?

P.S. This post wasn't processed by his girl friend, but by me.

1. ????????

2. I did happen to notice a certain flair, imagination, and poetry in "your" more subtle posts that just didn't seem natural for what I'm used to from EL LOBO LOCO!

3. This board is hardly the place for "significant others" to be poking around in anonymously. Even 10,000 close friends can't get a little privacy anymore with guys like you mucking things up!

"The Last Ship"

Post by Stefdragon »

Has anybody read "The Last Ship" by William Brinkley?

A very good book about a U.S. Missle Cruiser that is in the Far South Pacific when Doomsday occurs. Check it out. Pretty interesting story!

Books ?

Post by MikeB »

If you insist on books on this forum, I feel confident to recommend some Tom Clancy books. Sum of All Fears, Executive Decision, Dragon and the Bear....are quite good...to my mind.
The movie "Sum of All Fears" sucks. I am amazed T Clancy had anything to do with it. Read the book!

Stanza of lyrics from a song I wrote to celebrate the beginning of the 21st century. It's got a harmonica intro and interlude, very Dylanesque, like stems poking out the sides of your joint and seeds exploding in the middle of the fire. You know. The usual middle-aged American Vietnam veteran crapola.

right now I am reading a collection of short stories by Charles Bukowski called "The Most Beautiful Woman in Town."

After that I go back to Shelby Foote's excellent American Civil War historical narrative, the first book...

Seriously I read Stephenson's "Snow Crash". Very good one.

"Cryptonomicon" is on my must-read list (very long list).

He is the best. So real. So dirty. So broken. Yet so beautiful.

You know, he was born in Germany. To an American father and German mother, then he was brought to the USA at the age of 2 I believe...

I like it.
If you have read Cryptonimicon, you probably remember the quite lengthy discussion of Ares versus Athena. Ares the Warmonger and Athena the one who makes peace by going to battle. Two ways of using force, one righteous and one not. It applies to a lot of stuff in our history, and I am still trying to figure out if Stephenson is a genius or if he is scoring easy points by generalizing.
