Unit Picture: Small Arrows pointing down on the left hand side

Those small black arrows, sometimes they are white. Left upper side on the Unit Pictures.

What does it mean? Experience? Number of Elements says the manual, but it is nor accurate.

I see two ribbons and when I cleack there are 3 Elements. I see two ribbons and when I click on another there are 4 elements.

What do I see here?

Each black ribbon represents up to two elements.
1 black ribbon=one or two elements, 2=three/four on up to 6 black ribbons=eleven/twelve elements.
