Failed to extract project file to memory error

Post by downtown »

Hello,

I just ran the latest update thru the games check for updates feature. It looked for and installed the latest version of direct x successfully and gave me the final screen for a successful update. When I clicked the ok button I received the error "Failed to extract project file to memory." Now when I try either the game menu or the quick start I get this error popping up and the game never starts. As suggested in an earlier post I am attaching my dxdiag file for your review. Please advise.

run the file as admin from a admin account and make sure the game is added to the firewall and AV safe list, just in case

System DPI Setting: 120 DPI (125 percent) default is 100%

onboard video Card name: Intel(R) HD Graphics Family with no chip set mentioned either

laptop so can't advice to add a better card as there is none, it's a Intel HD Graphics 4000 GPU on the spec sheet, so mid ranged business pc not really meant for gaming either

Display Memory: 4169 MB
Dedicated Memory: 112 MB
Shared Memory: 4056 MB

Memory: 8192MB RAM total system ram, with the vga card using 4gb of that, so less for the system and o/s to use.

no gaming errors in logs, only o/s errors so no idea on what's the error but low on dedi ram for video so maybe that

Integrated Intel Gfx has this strange memory setup for a long time now. Although not made for gaming it should have no problem with WitW.
Please right-click on the WitW game menu icon on your desktop an choose "run as Administrator", then try to start WitW from there. If that fails try again with Antivirus temporarily disabled. If that fails again re-enable antivirus, locate the WitW installation folder and directly start the game executable "WarInTheWest.exe" (may only be shown as WarInTheWest). It should be first tested with "run as Administrator" and a second time as standard load with doubleclick.
If that fail again please re-download and re-apply the current patch, patch installer should be started via "run as administrator".

Thanks for the suggestions.....
I went directly to the .exe file in the game folder, right clicked it and opened it as administrator. Started right up. Game is working normally. Actually, I should have thought of that, but I had never seen that error before. Anyway.....onward and upward. [;)]

Hi,

same here. When starting (game menu) Autorun.exe, i get a messagebox with "Failed to extract project file to Memory." Windows 8.1, WITW Version 1.01.31
Same on another Computer with Win 10 WITW Version 1.01.20.

Same when started as admin, Firewall and AV off.

Not a big thing for me cause i am normally using (quick start) WarInTheWest.exe to run the game and this starts without errors.

For test purposes I have just installed WITW 1.0 on a Win 10 VM. autorun.exe works well.

If I copy this autorun.exe 1.0 version together with the autoplay folder to my game machine it starts without errors.

Just to let you know.

Regards
Peter

Is there a status update on a fix for this?

I can confirm that something broke with the v10120 update.

I did a complete uninstall and reinstall of the game and tested each version. The game menu on my Windows 10 Home laptop worked fine from v1 up to v10101 (with Operation Torch add-on).

Once I applied the v10120 update, it now crashes with this same error message. I can run the game fine directly from the game folder, but it certainly broke something with the game menu.

PS And yes, I have been running as an Admin and using DEEP42's workaround does get the game menu to load.

Have any of you guys put in a note at the Matrix helpdesk? I will point Matrix production to this thread. It's unclear to me what's going on. Since the quickstart is working ok for deep42 (and slick91 can run the exe directly), perhaps something has changed with the gamemenu program which is written by Matrix.

Quickstart is just the same as calling the WarInTheWest.exe directly.
The gamemenu program (autorun.exe) seems broken since 1.01.20.

No. As this is a Matrix forum, I would expect that Matrix is reading here. ;)

i can't see help desk tickets, but all forums are monitored, reports are always best so anyone isn't left guessing a reply,
How to get a DxDiag report file:

1. Click on "START" (on Windows 8 press “Windows key” and the “R” key at the same time)
2. Click "run" (skip this step on Windows 8 )
3. Type in "dxdiag" and click "OK"
4. Check through the tabs and perform all tests
5. Click "Save all Information..." and save the text file to a location of your choice

We prefer that DxDiag files be posted as message attachments (zip) rather than pasted into the body of the post.

add the exe of the game to your Anti Virus and firewall program, to make sure check the logs of these to see if it was one if any of them was to blame.

That usually means a 3rd party program, like an Internet security programs, is or could be interfering with the game or update installation.

run the game from a admin account and use full admin permissions.

please make sure all game pre requisite are installed with the game, even if you think or fully know there are already installed, it will only over write, and it may be that you have a older or newer version of these where as the game in question may need a certain version.

please make sure you are running the latest game version and have up to date drivers installed on your pc,

If you have the original version. So you'll need to update it from the Internet.
Please note that you'll only need the last update, as the updates are comprehensive. (not needed with steam)

Hi Joel,

I've entered a new help desk ticket and added a link to this thread. It's not a big deal by any means, but it is annoying when I want to check for any new updates.

Best regards!

I emailed Matrix about it on Saturday and will speak with them tomorrow about it. Hopefully they'll have a chance to take a look in the next few days. Sorry for the inconvenience. It is good to post a dxdiag report of your system in case the tech support people need it. Thanks.

I hope you have better luck than I've had so far. Here is Matrix's reply to my help ticket:

I'm sorry you are having problems with your game. Please try uninstalling the games, then please try reinstalling these, and in case it was needed I have sent you several separate emails containing links for you to download your games. Also, after having installed WitW and Torch, please download the latest update from the link below:

have you posted this anywhere so we can take a look?

i maybe able to help, but first would need a bit more info so not guessing a reply, post 10 above has my stand reply in it, and it works, as it's tried and tested, but not fool proof so there's always one that may slip by with a different problem.

Matrix will be looking at this problem with the game menu, but probably not until next week. Unfortunately their production team is down 2 of their 3 people this week so it probably won't happen until next week.

Hi everyone:

No, this has not been resolved and Matrix support has replied the same as a possible Admin/permission issue on my end. If so, then this permission restriction was somehow introduced with the last update.

Here is my last reply to support which is where I'm pushing back that this is a problem on my end:
Yes, all of my troubleshooting has been done as an Admin (right click->run as administrator): ver 1 install, all updates, and loading the game menu.

I understand that your QC testing worked fine. But from my standpoint, nothing changed in my system at all other than going from one working version to a new version. Even with multiple attempts at uninstall and reinstall the results are the same: works fine with no error (running as Admin) until the last patch is installed and then I get the project error with the game menu only. The game's exe works fine. Something changed in the autorun with the last patch that now causes this project memory error on my laptop.

I don't see this as being a user/admin related issue. I can provide any diagnostic reports that you wish to see just please let me know. I would like to help assist you any way I can in getting this fixed.

Just for clarity sake, this is the order of events on my end:

Laptop is a ASUS ROG G752VT-DH72 (Windows 10 Home - all MS updates applied, all drivers current)

1. Installed game (run as Admin) = Game menu works fine
2. Installed ver 10101 (run as Admin) = Game menu works fine
3. Installed Op Torch expansion (run as Admin) = Game menu works fine
4. Installed ver 10120 (run as Admin) = Game menu crashes with project/memory error

Workaround: copy autorun folder and files from v10101 (as mentioned above) into the install folder = Game menu works fine
Note: On another attempt, I tried the above install steps with no AV installed (using only Microsoft Defender) and still had the same outcome.

So from my perspective, why is this now a user related problem to sort through when clearly the ver 10120 patch changed something in the Autorun files. I'll be glad to help any way I can in troubleshooting this. Just let me know what you want me to try or do on my end.

sorry to here this[:(]

i know this may sound daft, but have you played the game and not rebooted the pc on the day you tried to install the latest patch?

for me this is my take on it with permissions

uninstall game and make sure the folder has also gone / empty and deleted

reboot windows

1. Install base game (run as Admin)
2. Install Op Torch expansion (run as Admin) (which auto installs the patch for you)
3. Installed ver 10120 (run as Admin)

don't run the game at all in between any stages, all patches can be grabbed from in game folder or from the ftp beforehand, or use the auto download tool to grab and run them, loading the front end isn't running the game so that's fine either way.

good luck and sorry again for your issues

Been there, done that. [:D]

In truth, the laptop is brand new so the first time I did the WitW install was in effect exactly what you outlined above and that was the first time I received the error...but I like the way you're thinking! [8D]
