Two questions?

Post by aaatoysandmore »

Does it have random maps, units, buy point system? You know you put in I want 1000 points of units then it lets you buy up to that amount?

How is it compared to Steel Panthers? Can you play any nation or just the Big 3 or 4 or 5?

There is no random map or scenario generator, or point purchase system for generating random scenarios. It doesn't have a quick battle feature like in the Combat Mission series(or whatever they called it.)However, the scenario editor gives us a blank slate to make scenarios and maps. You can make random games for yourself, or you can take accounts of battles and translate them to the game. I like convert scenarios from Advanced Squad Leader that I have liked playing on the table top. I know some of the scenarios that users have submitted have come from other game systems as well. There are user scenarios based on books or stories that they have written. idjester even made a scenario to recreate the battle of Ramaelle from Saving Private Ryan. In short, there's no random generation of scenarios, but there are quite a few user made scenarios to download, along with the 30 or so that come with the game.

In comparing it to Steel Panthers, from what I remember from when I played it, I get a little bit of the feel of Steel Panthers from the armor in TotH, but the infantry is much different. In Steel Panthers, the infantry shoots, moves, gets shot and runs away or dies. In TotH, shoot/move, run away/die is there, but in much more depth I feel. Leaders and morale have an effect in this game that I didn't feel was present in Steel Panthers. IIRC, you just get squads, heavy weapons and crews. I don't remember any kind of leadership or morale playing a role in the game.

The nationalities are the German, British, Russian, American. However, check the scenario forum. That hasn't prevented people substituting nationalities. Birds of Prey(from Squad Leader) calls for the Belgians vs. the Germans. The British work quite well for the Belgians. In another scenario by Rico 21, he has US Marines(played by elite US Army) taking an island from the Japanese(played by the Brits again). Maybe the full feel for the Japanese(step reduction vs. morale breaking, banzai charges and punji sticks) may not be there, but it has a nice tropical feel to it.

The game is afoot!

Thanks, you answered my questions well. Guess I'll still wait on Steel Tigers as I must have random quick battles generated by the computer. I'm too used to them now and like them better than any other. It kinda saddened me when Battlefront changed their quick battle system to pretty much player made. I really enjoy the first series much better and still play it to this day.

Any ways thanks for the info, very good post. [:)]
