Wow! First Impressions

Post by Skeleton »

Amazing. I have only logged about 10 minutes, but, I agree with the pacing on other threads and I love the fact that Poland did not fall on the first turn. The map is absolutely stunning in it's shear size and scope. I had concerns and apprehension regarding not being able to stack more than one counter per hex, but, after spending 10 minutes with the game, it is a non-issue. The immersion level is fantastic and I love the counters and their simplicity. I would like to see the three vital bits of information on them; Attack/Defense/Movement. I would also like to see some sort of window that pops up when interceptions occur beyond the Interception dialouge. My one and only complaint with the otherwise beautiful art work is the city hex graphics. I like the font and information, it is well done but the city and port graphics are horrid. Thus far it is my only complaint. This game has all the makings of the definitive, non grognard, spreadsheet crunching classic that will appeal to a huge audience. I love it! I did experience a crash on the very first start up, but, I attribute that to the fresh install and having too many windows open and apps running. The performance seemed to be a bit laggy, but nothing earth shattering.

Okay, logged a bit more time (about 90 minutes) and I have some additional thoughts. One, I have to say again, I love the scope and depth that is easy to absorb. Tons of choices, from production, to movement, to various strategies. Really well done. I also love the event choices that have been added, great touch! I do have a couple of observations though; I would really like to see multiple hex attacks implemented. Is the splash screen a place holder that shows up when processing turns? If not, it really needs to be changed. The winter map is a bit hard to decipher and for my taste a bit too dark and obstructs the view too much. I have to say, this really feels pretty polished, but, there is a lag in processing turns, loading, etc. I am absolutely loving what I have seen so far though. I can see myself playing this for years. It really delivers on alot of the promises that earlier WW2 Grand Strategy games fell short with, i.e., PC A3R, SWIE, TOF, etc. I can't say enough good about this game so far, wonderful work!

The game executable is in developer mode atm logging errors. So it's a bit slower then usual. Last week it was a bit faster. Not much, but a bit.

10-4, good to hear. As I stated, I am absolutely in love with this game. I have been waiting 20 years for something this good and easy to get totally into. Wonderful work and I cannot wait to purchase. I look forward to the development!

the city and port graphics are horrid

I bet that once this game is released to the public, some graphics guru's will come up with some nice mods. Meanwhile, I've made a few rookie adjustments myself, as seen below. Changed the Rail Lines so that they are easy for me to see. Replaced the Ports with the Anchor symbol. Put some Gun Turrets in the Fortified Line. The cities are a pain and I've tried several different things but so far nothing that looks good. The latest attempt can be seen in the screen shot for the Towns and I'm working on using that style of graphic to modify the cities.
