The best way to lose?

Post by Quinnes »

Hello everyone,

I have been playing ToS for a few days (great game!). Today I battled on a random map for the first time. The map type was hell and it sure was. :p
I have a question which I'll ask in the last text block, but first a little background, which you may skip over. :)

Before we had even spotted the enemy our experimental napalm titan exploded while running up a hill, killing the pilot. It didn't explode right away, but some rockets exploded, forcing the engine to shut down. Apparently it kept heating up, considering it exploded a while later. A sad loss but fortunately the pilot was still a rookie.
Our three long range titans were not able to get on a hill soon enough because of their inferior heat regulation, so the enemy was already in medium range before they could fire any rockets. Still we were able to ambush and disable two of their titans. But then the remaining five foes broke through our defense, quickly gunning down the most damaged close combat titan. The pilot ejected safely.
Now it was a medium range fight with our two close combat and three long range titans against five medium/close range enemies. Not the best situation and the thing I feared most happened: the enemy targeted one of the lightly armored long range titans. The pilot tried to hide behind a hill, actually made it there but overheated and his engine shut down. The enemy was already firing at the next missile titan.
I didn't want to lose a second pilot due to overheating, especially because he was our most experienced pilot and the fight was hopeless anyway. So everyone ejected. To my surprise the disabled titan was waiting in the factory when we got home.

So now the question is, how do I keep my pilots and titans when I lose?
I can't disable my own titans on purpose myself and surrendering doesn't seem to be an option. One way probably is to pay 500k at the HQ, but my team never had that much money yet. Is there a trick to this, or can I only hope that the enemy doesn't kill the pilots but only disables the titans?
Thanks in advance,
and if any of the developers reads this, great work! It's one of the nicest games I've played in a long time. I'm looking forward to playing the final game. :)

Flee the battle :) Leave the battlefield by walking to any border hex. You'll get yellow movement arrows, and a confirmation dialogue box.

Try to leave the map if possible. In the final version retrieving a team in hq will be much cheaper for rookie teams. Will be 4 times upkeep, not fixed 500.000.

The best way to lose is to win.

(I know, it hardly makes sense, but I had to say it. If you win, you're a lot better off.) :-)
We sometimes catch a window
A glimpse of what's beyond
Was it just imagination
Stringing us along?
More things than are dreamed about
Unseen and unexplained
We suspend our disbelief
And we are entertained
