PW error in Beta....Linux install

Post by Lowpe »

Using play on linux, how do I eliminate the pw error starting a beta game?

I can get the non beta game to run fine (latest official), when I try to create the shortcut link on play on linux for the beta I get the dreaded PW error.

For the life of me, I can't remember what I did last time.[&:]

And Temagic mentions no clues.

Make sure the start in folder is the main WitP folder, not the Beta 2 folder.

Thanks, Bill, but that is the problem. I don't know how to change it in playonlinux. I know it will be something simple...

Unless the pwhex (any of the 3 files) is actually missing then AFAIK this error is always the 'Start in' pointing to the Beta instead of the witpae folder as Bill says.

Maybe the 'right' way to fix it is to figure out how to make that change on playonlinux, but you could try the 'wrong' way to fix it.

Rename the executable in the witpae folder (instead of deleting it so you have it if you need it), then copy in the Beta executable. Be sure to do the same with all the assicated files from the Beta folder (the .dll files, etc) Last, instead of using a shortcut that points to the Beta folder, use one that points to the witpae folder. In summary, you are manually installing the Beta to look like the regular version of AE.

That is what I do even using Windoze.

You could also put the three pw files into the Beta folder.

But then the game might not find all the sub-folders with artwork, save games, scenarios...

Ding, ding, Ding![&o]

That is what I think I did in the past, and just did it again, and the program works fine!

Many thanks witpqs and Bill.[&o]

First, though, I tried Bill's idea...but it didn't work.

I just overwrote the files since this is a clean install with no mods so easy to start from scratch if need be.

Now, just one last step, using AndyMac's corrected scenario 6 files and I am done. Be good to be running turns in Linux again.

Okay, AndyMac's corrections are installed, and everything is working splendidly.

Thanks so much![:)]

I will be curious to see how fast the turn runs compared to Windows 10....because I got the turns running almost too fast in Win 10. That is not really a problem, just a statement about how well the game runs in Windows 10 with the proper switches enabled.[:)]

If I get some time here in the near future I will put together a better install guide than Temagics as things have changed some since he did his.

But I think I may try to get tracker working first.[;)]

This would be greatly appreciated.

Tracker working in Linux would be great.
