Rocket Ships

Post by Mundy »

I think there's a probably bug regarding the ship type, LCS(L).

It only allows you to put them into transport or support groups -- not amphibious. In essence, there's no way to really use them.

I'm not sure if this an issue in the engine, or if it's more scenario based. This is in DBB-C. Thinking about it, maybe it's the latter.

Sometimes you can put together TFs into one mode, then change the mode later even though there are ships present that could not be added to the subsequent TF mode. Try it and report what happens. Give us a game save and I'll try it.

I'm not familiar with or forget about it, but the manual says: LCS(L) Landing Craft, Support (Large) "A small craft modified to close inshore support of amphibious landings."

So, it would appear that it is not intended to land troops or equipment, (maybe supplies?). Let's look at how it is armed for a clue. Perhaps in a Support mode TF it can very well do what it is supposed to do as long as it is in the same hex and perhaps in a follow mode to the amphibious TF.

Looks like a gunboat to me. It would be interesting to know if it can do its job properly as part of a support TF, and also if it can do its job properly if you can find a way to wrangle it into an amphib TF as I suggested. I don't know of any way to test that. Perhaps Bill Olson knows about it.

I am pretty sure Jocke used them to bombard against Obvert, at least that is my memory.

Silly!
The first two words of the designation are "Landing Craft", and if you start an amphib convoy with only a "Landing Craft" type (including LSTs) it will revert to a LC type TF without any command by you. Put your other amphib vessels in first and then add the Landing Craft. Or, change the LC TF to "escort" and add some AP and AK types.
The type of TF also affects the type of escort vessels you can have. I am not sure if DEs will go in a LC TF.

Also note that an LCI(G) is a gun vessel and usually will have some ammo for several rounds of suppression fire during landings, but the LCI(R) fires all the rockets in one go and then has to go replenish. The LCI(G) or LCI (R) will not act as a bombardment vessel - it must be part of a TF that is landing something (even supply, I think) because it is a landing support vessel, not a naval vessel capable of bombardment.

Try creating an escort type TF, add fire support ships and some APA/AKA/AP/AK. You should be able to change the TF Type to Amphib. Once there you can add any amphibiously loaded ships around.
Hope this works!

There is no bug identified here.

The game design has these vessels going into a Barge TF or a Landing Craft TF.  Both those types are subsets of the Amphibious TF.  There is therefore no problem in providing gunfire support from the LCS(L) to a beach landing.

Thanks Alfred. It wasn't obvious, since Barge or LC TFs aren't a "natural" choice.
