Levels for "dug in" posture

Post by vettim89 »

One of my frustrations with the game is that dug in units are too easily routed out of their positions. Perhaps this is due to the fact that in reality there is more than one level of being "dug in". Some examples:

* A unit that marches to a location and is ordered to hold. Infantry dismount and perhaps dig some basic trenches/fox holes. Vehicles try to find a position of defilade. This might take 20 minutes

* A unit has been at a position for some time (read at scenario start). Infantry will have good trenches/fox holes dug perhaps with overhead cover. Vehicles will be positioned with the best hull down locations in the area. All units will have some level of camouflage. This type of emplacement would take an hour or more

* A unit is set up around a vital point for an extended period (8-12 hours minimum). Infantry will have engineered firing positions with overhead cover and camouflage. Vehicles will be in engineered firing positions with excellent camouflage. These would be the game equivalent of a prepared position. We need some combat engineers to help us out (yes, another call for this feature)

So in game terms a unit that moves to a hex and is given a hold order but is engaged fairly quickly will have a much lower level of defensive preparations than say a unit who has been sitting in a hex for two or more command cycles with the hold order. I know there is a coming change to delay posture changes. Perhaps with that a little bit of a buff to units that are truly dug in. Also we need us some engineers

The game covers your 3 cases.
Hold order in a hex covers case 1.
Units holding for 30 minutes or so then get dug in and are like your case 2.
Fortifications can be placed by the scenario designer and reflect your case 3 situation above.

We will be tweaking some of this as we add more fidelity to the engineering model of the game engine.
OTS is looking forward to Southern Storm getting released!
