OT - Good old games site

Post by IdahoNYer »

Found a pretty good site for old (ancient to some folks) computer games: http://www.old-games.com

Downloaded a bunch of great old classics including some gems (if you can live with archaic graphics) that still play great and many even have the game manual.

For us WiTP AE forumites waiting for their next PBEM turn:
- Carrier Strike: Reasonably good CV vs CV battles in the Pacific
- Great Naval Battles Series: a classic in its day for tactical WWII ship to ship combat
- Action Stations: probably the BEST ship to ship WWII game ever done....if you can live with the interface and graphics today it still plays just like I remember back in the day.

and many, many others.

Most seem to play very very well on my Windows 10 machine. One game I can't get to work right yet is "Fighting Steel" which is a shame - but I'm still fiddling with it...

I'm the guinea pig I guess. E-SET didn't squawk about it. Windows said publisher could not be verified.

Yes indeed it is safe.

I have used many times.

I have never downloaded Indy (Independent) Dev studio games; only mainstream "large studio" (even if bankrupt) old game I still love.

It is a "DRM free version" of Steam with most games being older than 2008 ~ now some 8 plus years.

They have Visa Mastercard and Paypal settlement so obviously some bank considers them legitimate. Microsoft security essentials for Windows 7 deemed it safe and since is is DRM free there is no need for active internet connection.

--

All games are / were updated to Windows 7 standards and therefore operated flawlessly; with Windows 10 I am not so certain.

In addition to Carrier Strike I can vouch for:

(1) The Baldurs Gate collection.
(2) Neverwinter Nights collection. Problems with a 256 color switch on Neverwinter Nights 1 but the forums link you easily.
(3) Icewind Dale collection.
(4) Railroad Tycoon 2,
(5) Panzer General 2
(6) Pacific General
(7) and Rollercoaster Tycoon (can't recall which version - my kids play it).

These at least all seem to work on Windows 10 as well with minimal or no fuss. I have not played extended hours on any of these for a few years.

Many of them go on sale for as little as a few (American converted to Canadian + premium) dollars i.e. $ 5-6 CAD vs $ 3 USD

--

I never heard of the Great Naval Battle series so any further game information and windows 10 capability would be appreciated.

A People that values its privileges above it's principles will soon loose both. Dwight D Eisenhower.

Here's the detail page of the download. Why does it say 7-zip? I have 7-zip, do I need to unzip the file? Pay no heed to that woman in the background.

There are two games I couldn't find, one is Birthright and the second is Destiny (old strategy game).

Btw they upgrade it to Win7, Win7 is bad. Hopefully they have it compatible with XP and Win10. You can run the game as admin and under XP though.

Thanks for the tip.[&o]

A site to keep, no doubt!

I got Civil War Generals 2, and it works. Kind of hard on the eyes on a 27' screen, though [:D]

Had no problems with GNB 1 running on my Windows 10. old graphics just a bit hard on my eyes...

Here's what I've got running so far in addition to the ones I mentioned earlier:

101st Airborne - seems to run fine, but no manual so I'm lost as how to play.
Combat Mission 2 - runs OK, seems a bit sluggish though
Birth of the Federation - runs fine
Kingmaker - runs fine (loved the old Avalon Hill Kingmaker and this does seem like a pretty good transition...)
Western Front - runs fine
50 Mission Crush - Need to still fiddling with graphics - black aircraft icon on black terrain doesn't work.

Have plenty more to check out - subscribed for 30 days.

Most of these games I've had in the past, but haven't been able to play with changes to Windows over the years. Nice to seem them again!
