Rules Question on Applying Naval Damage

Post by rkr1958 »

It's a surface combat and my opponent has 1 CP and 1 TRS in an isolated sea area. The damage I inflict is X, 2Ds and A. No surprise points left so my opponent applies the damage. He applies the X to the CP. Next he applies a D to the TRS but rolls high and gets an abort. Should he then have to roll for the second D against the TRS?

MWiF did NOT allow a roll for the second D. I'm basically asking is this how the rule is suppose to work?

Yes. Once a ship has suffered a 'A' result it is immune to further damage.

Edit 2: Note that if the TRS had been damaged instead, then it would have been targeted for the second 'D' as well.

Edit:

Cut from RAC: 11.5.8 Surface naval combat
....
You must implement all ‘X’ results first, then all ‘D’ results and, finally, all ‘A’ results.
For each combat result you inflict, the owner selects a target to suffer that result. For every 3 surprise points
you spend, you can select the target instead of your opponent (see 11.5.6).
You can choose the same unit to suffer more than one result, unless it is already destroyed or has suffered an
‘A’ result.

Your opponent didn't do it efficiently.

A "D" in a naval combat means an "X" for a convoy (I am not sure. He could have killed the convoy with one "D", so he should have selected X for the TRS, if he wasn't lucky , the TRS would have had a "D" instead and:

1 would not have abandoned the area, so the last "D" could have been rolled (because the result would have been "D" not "A")
2 if the second roll he was lucky he would get a second "D" and sunk the TRS as well.

oooops:

This, only if you play with
SiF option 9: Every 2 convoy points counts as a ship for resolving combat. Convoy points use their printed defence factors. An ‘X’ result destroys 2 convoy points; a ‘D’ result destroys 1 convoy point and an ‘A’ result aborts 1 convoy point.

This was a surface combat, so the defender gets to pick who takes the damage. Putting the X on the CP makes perfect sense to minimize the damage, which is what the defender did.
I thought I knew how to play this game....

I stand corrected. Then it was a good application of losses, not only because of the X to a convoy but because the D could become an A as it happened and forfeit the second D.
