PBEM campaign Graham vs Peter

Post by deVada »

Hi Folks, here's a short history and current events from our pbem battles. Graham is the Emperor, I am wearing Roosvelt's shoes.
We've started from 41 rising sun with balance set to even, under 3.0 version quite long ago ... Hope You'll enjoy. Any comments and suggestions would be welcome. :)

War started as usual with Pearl smashing raid, luckily damaged ships have managed to sail off just before second raid in next week.
In first months of war, althrough some US attempts to keep Singapore and Port Moresby Japanese army flooded the Pacific taking New Guinea, whole Australia and in the beginning of 43 whole India ex. two last chinese bases stopping on Wake Island / Tarawa / Efate line. Japs had a brillant strategy of combining their task forces with troops and supply, merging it with strong CV escort and BB pounding so the Allies haven't much to say. The supply levels were also kept on high levels due to excellent Japanese ability to manage it.
The only Allied victory was sinking the Kaga by single 2000lb bomb thrown from B17 from Cairns, but entire British fleet was sunk or withdrawn. Two or three allied CVs left on the bottom after being torpedoed by G4Ms ruling the ocean in whole 1942.
Allied counteroffensives started in early 43 by a brave raid on Wake and then instantly an amphibous landing on Saipan, but land forces refused to fight, then Wake fell to 48th (99exp) Japanese division and the action resulted in a diseaster when Japanese fleet made it back from Indian waters.
Then in the march or april of 43 Allies stroke through Attu Island taking Paramushiro and placing some planes there, but the same as in case of Saipan JN came and smashed US resistance, took the base back, only some "Robinsons" for 201st Rgt are still holding until november, cursing the gamegods for cutting the C47 out ... Right now, there's a great artificial reef built around Paramushiro, made mainly of downed Japanese planes, with many ships added also. It surely would be a major tourist attraction after the war.
Starting from may 1943 US Navy, strenghtened by two Essex class aircraft carriers, maked a swift offensive through Wake, Eniwetook, Kwajaleien, Maoleap and Tarwa, taking Truk after a over monthly siege and regular day by day bombardment which regularly killed 200 or 300 Japs per week. The two Japanese divisions are still holding on but their days are counted.
In meantime two major clashes between complete navies took place on Saipan waters, leaving USS Washington and some of older type heavy cruisiers on the bottom as well as Yamato with two other battleships on Japanese side. Both fleets have been withdrawn for "minor paintworking" but 4 US CVs are still operating with 10 BBs. Japanese navy's BBs haven't shown up yet, and CV's went with far range attack on Wake using only Zeros which were smashed by P47's stationed there.
Then, mainly in IX.1943 Allies took Hollandia, Cape Gloucester, Admirality Isle ensuring almost full control of skies over Rabaul and Lae, without any serious opposition of Japanese air or naval powers.
Now, in the beginning of november 43 it is still unclear where will the Allies strike next, Palau and Saipan are heavily fortified so some major surface and carrier actions are expected.
Right now all US battleships and Carriers were sent to bombard Saipan to check the defenses there, Wewak and Lae would be invaded by McArthur troops and some minor fleet reinforcing and reorganization would take place. Two newly refitted CVs are on their way from from US so we gonna see great carrier raids soon.
Emperor is seeming to be withdrawing some forces south of Rabaul (proably to Australia) simultaneously reinforcing Saipan and Palau garrisons, the same as Leyte and Samar which seem to be the vital points is second defense line.

Reports from battlefield tomorrow.

Impressive Japanese performance--what are the Victory Point totals?
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

...
althrough having many skills he do not know Japanese language ...
proably
;)

He is indeed a dangerous opponent and I admire him for good organization, extremal caution and flexible strategy, althrough at price of taking Australia and India he almost completely left Pacific bases undefended. My strategy is to protect Hawaii and Aleutians at all cost and to take Tokyo as soon as possible. India and Australia haven't got any strategical importance to me indeed. I should be able to raid Japan in may or june of 1944. Cannot say now which way I am planning to go but Saipan and Palau is under serious danger now with Rabaul and Solomons almost cutten off. I even suppose that a quick troop evacuation from those regions is currenly under execution.

As a friendly gift I'll try to recapture and liberate Australia, just to allow Graham barbecues, internet and other western civilization stuff.

Haven't seen the results yet, but our carrier forces were both at Saipan last week, but without engaging each other. A routine troop & supply pounding occured.

Attached file contains the score for now. Ship looses are 90% british fleet.

Impressive advance indeed. Surely it's not easy to conquer Australia and India, but that's not a winning strategy. British and Australians are minor powers in Pacific compared to USA.

Most of the Japanese war effort must be directed against USA. Graham has ignored Americans and now his situation is getting very poor. Still he has many kill points, so draw game should be possible.

Yes, Aussie, Tojo was the orignal nickname that I logged on with , but somehow I lost that identity. Why do you ask about Tojo?

The great thing about playing Devada, is that I get a move regular as clockwork every night...the time zones help. Also. he continued trying counter offensives to upset my plans even when he was weakest, and he did not surrender at the end of 1942 when things were really dark for the Allies. My objective is to see how many Abombs I can survive

Well, Graham is really optimistic man ...
I'm cunning hard to make him defeated before these greatest acts of terrorism are to occur ...
;)

Battle reports :

Over 600 Japanese soldiers died due to naval bombarding Saipan made by Merril and Spruance, both sitting of 6 BB groups,
Halsey's raid cleaned up (almost empty anyway) airfield there.
Japs tried to attack with land based planes but only few fighters seen allied ships.
Japanese carriers (they were sent to Wewak - but no action taken) under Yamaguchi were attacked twice by Truk garrison but only fighters fought. There are no other bombers except 80 B24's which continued their efforts to sink Saipan instead of carriers.
Nimitz will surely move some helldivers there.
Scott attacked huge enemy group of AKA's nearby Gasmata, sinking few of them. The enemy fleed despite the fact that 3 CLs and 30 DDs should generally have no problems getting all of them.
Vengeances from Cape Gloucester sank whole TF of 2 AP's on their way to Rabaul, some minor air strikes hit both sides in the region.
Paramushiro supply depot was smashed as every week from 100+ Thunderbolts from Attu, in revenge Japs bombed without any serious effect the remnants of 201st rgt hidding in the caves there.

And the biggest succes :
A brave raid of adm. Radford has taken place encouraging the US public opinion. He took his USS Sims and made it unspotted from Truk to Tokyo, firing his guns twice at hated capital of evil, killing 6 soldiers and crippling two tanks. As revealed by intelligence - Japanese base commander commited seppuku this morning.
Widow of adm. Radford visited Washington today also, receiving the posthumous Medal of Congress awarded to her husband.
May he R.I.P.

Intelligence confirms that Yamaguchi is withdrawing his ships to Jolo, but it may be a trick so Halsey won't be disturbed reconfiguring his 4CV force with two CVs which have just came from US ports.

More to follow

US fleet in Truk raised anchors today and sailed north to Marianas.
Their target is Guam (proably undefended) and Tinian (with 1st INA div onboard). Six infantry divisions (inc 1st and 4th Marines) and huge remnants of 1st AUS tank division are expected to take both bases this week. Saipan would be bombarded by Spruance and Merril forces, Tinian would be also softened up by bombing.
New battleship USS Iowa would be tested by this occasion.
Halsey with all available carriers will stay at Tinian to ensure air superiority in the area until engineers could build up Guam and Tinian to at least 4 size. Huge amounts of supplies and fuel are to be delivered instantly to both islands.
Isolation of Saipan will allow to take it next month, or in january.
The fighitng will be more fierce as Aussies want to take revenge on Japs for killing the 1st AUS tank div on Saipan last year.
No major actions are planned for Rabaul region, only Lae and Wewak would be attacked by US land forces.
Enemy carriers are at Davao, proably they won't leave the port.
Japanese high command is seeming to treat Philipines as US next target.
USS Interpid together with few CVEs entered sea trials last week.
More reports to follow.

Both Tinian and Guam were captured without any serious Japanese resistance, althrough US lost at Tinian over 700 men.
Guam has 1 size airfield, Tinian 2, Saipan 9 now, so US engineers would have something to do before taking Saipan would be possible. Some forces would be proably sent there to make an capturing attempt of course if the island will remain on the surface after further bombardment.
;)
Interesting thing is, what Japs are going to do now. Maybe we'll see major surface and carrier battles next week.
They have no chances I suppose... Halsey's forces are powerful enough to protect both bases, and over ten battleships are in the area, almost untouched or without damage.
5th Fleet arrival will also make some things off Nimitz head and the actions would be better prepared.

Hi DeVada,

Do you always use your Iowa class BBs for bombardment? They have an excellent AA capactiy, making them great for Carrier TFs. Nice to use some extra 16" guns however if you have carrier escorts to spare.

Just after taking Tinian & Guam and moving some P47s there Wilkinson took another leap to Pagan.
Japanese carriers aren't attacking still so navy divided itself.
Halsey with all CVs together with Spruance's 11 battleships went to destroy opposition at Pagan, Scott with all available Baltimore class heavy cruisiers went to bombard Iwo Jima hoping to engage a large resupplying TF scheduled there by Japanese command. Large numbers of troops are sent to strenghten Tinian and Guam, in case of Japanese counterstrike. Intelligence is keeping silent in that matter anyway so Japs are proably under retreat now (call it evacuation).
Gasmata should be captured by McArthur boys walking from Cape Gloucester and an attempt to take Rabaul will be executed (the base is proably abandoned). Lazy boys at Wewak and Lae maybe also try to draw their weapons at least ...

Allied command wonders all the time where are Japanese battleships. No clue of them or of Tanaka so USS Iowa stays in line with older BBs just in case. Althrough Yamato is doomed -Musahi still rolls.

USS Interpid finished sea trials and was sent to Central Pacific in order to join Halsey raiders. Old veteran - USS Tenesee is also back, after long healing required by effects of Saipan battle with Yamato.

Battle results to follow, Graham is on his way home right now
Have a nice week !

Well, the Pagan invasion ended in a draw.
1st Cav division from Australia (they were bribed by Graham or what ???) just landed ashore, eaten some coco - nuts just to load up the ships and sail back to Tinian ...

Gasmata was captured without any opposition almost.
Rabaul was captured with more than 100 planes there, a TF of 4 KPM APs under Doorman was bombed by planes from Rabaul, two ships sunk but Doorman is a good leader. There was no LCUs there so base fell. Right now I've got free hand in Solomons and New Guinea. Anyway, I do not need that area ...

Japanese navy dissapeared, maybe they're cunning something special ?
Another TF is seen on way to Iwo Jima (proably just supplies), Scott will again try to cath them.

USS New Jersey entered sea trials. AA value 540 ...
Next week will allow US to transfer some more divisions to the first line, then Pagan II and Iwo Jima invasion is scheduled.
Gun crews on CAs and BBs would surely go deaf. Continous fire against Saipan, Pagan, Iwo Jima ... Just for VP ...

It must lead to final carriers & battleships battle. After that - the war would be won. :D

Turkey shoot

Post by Graham Smith »

The Japanese attempted to engage the main US battle force (11 BB and 16DD) which was bombarding Pagan, using all available battleships and carriers..... 45 major ships in all. However, all task forces stopped inexplicably in the middle of the Philipine sea, leaving the pride of the Japanese land based airforce to be destroyed....846 aircraft lost for one American Destroyer and no other measureable damage. %$##~)!
This was worse than the original Marriannas Turkey shoot, and 6 months earlier, not a good omen.
Incidently, does anyone know if the total aircraft losses displayed in the final battle report are all totally destroyed...or does the total include damaged aircraft? If it includes damaged, is there any way to judge real losses?

Turkey shoot 2

Post by Graham Smith »

In an attempt to get the sake ration into Saipan and Pagan, the Japanese unwisely again tried to challenge American air power in the central pacific. However the Toryus are now completely outclassed by the Thunderbolts, Hellcats and Spitfires, and so another 400 japanese aircraft were added to the artificial reef around Saipan.
The Wewak and Lae remains in Japanese hands, with enemy bases are all round.

But the moral victory goes to the gallant Japanese defenders. The cowardly Allies use their material superiority to bombard starving japanese garrisons, and refuse to attack the Japanese carrier forces, which are now loaded with A6M5 fighters and looking for a fight.

PS Why sake? How can we do a banzai charge without sake?

The last week was quite quiet ...

Regarding to moral victory - it should be given to US navy for bombing Tokyo two or three weeks ago !
The author of this stunning success - brave adm. Radford was found alive last week by PBM Mariner from 2nd Recon Wing stationed on Wake Island.
Althrough it seems impossible, he swam alone from Tokyo Bay to Marianas, taking only two short rests on Iwo Jima and Pagan, which additionally allowed US to gain some extra intelligence data about Japanese defences there. (that's true that Sake level is dangerously low!)
That's the rightest and uncompromising posture a US sailor can show.
His promotion seems to be only a matter of time.

Next week may see a longly awaited carrier clash. SIGINT revealed that Japanese fleet is at Palau. No decision yet if they'll be attacked, but the perspective of major carrier & surface battle is tempting. One and only dilema is how strong are Japanese land based squadrons based in Palau. It has level 8 airfield, and at least three squardons of Toryus and Hiens are reported to operate from there.

We'll see tomorrow !

The new - 1944 Year celebrations were conducted together with celebrations of US latest super victory - sinking of CVL Chitose on Waigen Isle waters. The ship took part in recent pirate raid of Yamaguchi's carriers to that island. The island was succesfully defended, althrough it is having now few big holes in its middle. The engineers are trying to keep Waigen on the surface with great chance of success.
Japs were not that lucky ... Chitose - pride of Japanese navy, and the favourite ship of the Emperor was doomed by a massive air raid, with many many bomb hits and our brave B24 crews risking their lives (as report says) ...
Anyway looses were heavy - over 600 planes were lost nearby, on both sides.

Rear Adm Radford became a leader of Northern Pacific HQ in recognition of his many successes.

Just after waking up after the new year's party intelligence revealed another carrier raid, this time on Hollandia. All carriers are scheduled to that direction so maybe finally Japs will loose their last opportunity to do domething against the power of USA.

Still killing some remnants of Japanese army in Lae.
Wewak was evacuated last night by "Express to Tokyo" or something like that. It was never used before so after picking few destroyers up to the surface - our engineers and sciencists would have a chance to take a look what's the idea ... Anyway pity that some of Japs made it out.

As usually, Nimitz will try to sink Saipan using 90% of guns even fired in the II WW by US on Pacific - in one place, in one day.
Japanese troops there are showing surprisingly good readiness levels ... It must be ended.
Tinian has now 3 bat of engineers and size 4 airfields so at least there's an air cover to Saipan resupplying operations.
3 full size divisions eat a lot !

Is the carrier raid a decoy or we gonna see NICE battle - ?

Stay tuned. We'll know tomorrow, Graham is sleeping now.
btw
Australian people are strange ... Sleeping all the day long, then working all night long - just like bats. My brother claims also that they have to be like bats because they live upside down. Gosh, I fear all the time that Graham may  fall down to the cosmic space and never return !

Both sides are completely demoralized as the carriers refused to give us a brillant battle. They have just missed each other.
What a pity. :(
Some say that Halsey's madness ended in smashing the Express to Tokyo running from Wewak with 1st SNLF brigade ... Many destroyers were lost. Sharks had wonderful evening ...

Usual bombardment of Saipan took place, killing few hundreds of Japanese soldiers, and a lot of sake stores. Allied lazy soldiers captured some sake rations left ashore during Japanese landing last year and are still figting it. No battles.
Japs tried to develop Kamikaze squadrons, but due to some propaganda failures they don't have first volunteer yet to check the new tactics up.

As for now they have activated their airforce, which was intensively trained in Japan, transfering many squadrons to Saipan and the area. The Great Saipan (artificial) Reef was again strenghtened with few hundreds of ships.
Mother Nature knew what she was doing while placing giant tectonical ditches in the sea. The one at Mariannas is accurately to accumulate (under the surface of course) the effect of 3 months lasting air battle, plane on plane up to the surface.

We have also a small artificial mountain in plans, but not decided yet where to build it. Graham wants a mountain of dead bodies in Tokyo, I would rather prefer underwater city of carriers. You know, tourists, COCA-COLA, money.

The astonishing fact, that all bases in Mariannas had almost completely empty airfields for most of the time, is still a good question.

Japanese carriers escaped to India ... The attack on Hollandia was fake. They're now on course to Woleai, but I am sure that the standoff range is 15 and orders are to "return port". A small trick to make SIGINT users blind. Be careful US Generals !

Inconclusive week.

No land battles at Saipan, maybe Central Pacific has too small amount of preparation points ? The soldiers (under Geiger) are refusing to fight.
Usual bombardment (few hundreds of Japs killed) and fierce air clashes, again over 300 japanese planes were destroyed, 150 allied too. Not one Japanese plane made it to bombard Tinian.
Japanese carriers haven't shown up, but they were ordered to protect the Tokyo express from Wewak.

Port Moresby was taken by McArthur's forces marching from Buna. Many empty bottles of sake were captured, but no Japs found.

Tokyo Express task force evacuating Wewak lost another 3 destroyers due to land based air attacks from Woleai Island, several remaining destroyers were damaged. This was surely an expensive evacuation.

Anyone has a clue how to make Allied soldiers fighting on Saipan ? They do consume 100 AKAs of supply & fuel each turn, readiness level is flowing around 30 and they just lie on the beach and do nothing. There are currently 4 full sized divisions.

Saipan defenders are a pain in the rear ... They're holding whole offensive because US cannot allow to leave such large base backwards.

Strange thing happened to scores. Last time I looked at it for the last time (see the bitmap above) Japanese kills were near 51000 pts, now they're at 80000 pts !!! I do not remember any big battle last weeks, especially I do not remember that in last month Japs killed half many Allies as in previous three years of war.
Is there a way to explain this ?

Regards
Peter

Yes--I'm afraid it's exactly the way it's supposed to be. You are encountering the Japanese Kill Point Multiplier which kicks in at the beginning of 1944. To see the full details, read the "Pacific War Data Card" document file, which is included in the Version 3.1 download. Gary Grisby wanted to give the Japanese side a bit more of a chance, so to simulate American "war weariness", the Japanese Kill Points are multiplied by 1.5 in 1944, and by 2 in 1945. The good news is that the multiplier goes away if you can reduce Japanese production points below 500. But in the latest version, that's very hard to do. Start training those B-29's to attack factories!
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?
