Infantry holding in urban terrain

Post by Rhetor »

Hi All!

I am looking for some hints. I am playing the Defence of Weser Crossing scenario, and naturally, seeing all these city hexes, I put my infantry units deep within the town, expecting it to be most effective against massed Soviet armour. To my surprise, they prove to be useless. One might expect that an unsupported armour unit would be ambushed by infantry set to hold an urban area. Instead, 12 T72s, probably in fast move or assault mode, just drive into them, open fire, and knock out half of a unit with zero losses. What am I doing wrong? The infantry units were set to hold at during deployment phase.

I find it helps if the infantry are in place for quite a while, often 30mins+, before the 'guests' gatecrash the party.

Also give the Inf 'Hold' orders.

I have seen Inf really hammer unsupported tanks and hold for quite a while against massive odds.

Hope this helps,

Also take a look at the infantry and see if they are outfitted with heavy anti-tank weapons. If they are no LAWs, RPGs, or ATGMs, the infantry will only scratch paint with bullets and grenades. When there are no tank killer weapons, infantry in any cover is not much more than a speed bump.

Well, the infantry in question are platoons of Mech Infantry, armed with M72s and a Dragoon section. I set them to "hold" during deployment, before the game starts. The hex is "dense urban", offering 90% cover. Infantry is within command range, readiness around 90%, and seemingly dismounted.

In this scenario, Soviet tanks reach them after 2-3 cycles, thus giving the inf at least half an hour to settle in. Still unsupported tank units close in, and instead of being ambushed, they even get to fire first.

Is there any way to send back their transport M113s? I figure this might cause the unit to be easily detected at close quarters.

EDIT: PS, I will try to run it a few times, maybe it is just a case of a bad roll of digital dice :D

The infantry should definitely ambush them.

From what Ive seen, infantry usually give a good account of themselves against unsupported armor when fortified in urban terrain...

Reloading a save may not help. The game saves the random seed to keep PBEM games synced up. Let us know if that works for you.
