Impressions of Game so far

Post by buckeyebob »

Bottom line, you have a winner here. You've got a combination between War in Europe (board game) and Hearts of Iron.

First impression on starting up the game is positive. It's no frills and for a grognard like me, I welcome that to get right to business.

Game play is pretty intuitive. As with most games, I want to get right into it and start playing and it took no time at all to figure it out. The graphics, while not state of the art, are more than adequate for a computer wargame. I like the ability to customize the indicators for reinforcements and upgrades.
The meld of airpower and ground combat is very nice. You learn early on to soften up positions before assaulting them. And to have fighters to escort your bombers The multiple attacks by armored units is a nice way to simulate their shock effect.

I like the way invasions of Norway, Denmark, DAK, etc are handled somewhat abstractly as I can see (because I tried) attempting to plan them in the game is very difficult, if not impossible given the game rules.

The diplomatic interface is simple and good enough for the level of complexity and simulation of the game.
I like the differentiation in the research screen, but like I reported in the bug thread, their appears to be a programming problem between the level researched and the level units can be upgraded.
I really like the production system. Simple, but very versatile. The production queue reminds me of WIR.
I haven't played enough yet to see if the AI player does stupid or repetitive things that allow 'perfect plans' to outsmart it, but thus far it seems to be behaving.

Minor complaints: Maybe it's my graphics card, but scrolling in and out is jerky and slow and the levels are too far apart. Same with scrolling on the main screen.
Also, I get a couple 'scripts not running' when clicking on the icon on my desktop. I get two messages, answer yes to both but it does not seem to cause any problems.

Just got the email with the new version, so I'm going to download it and see what new features and bugs have been fixed.

Not sure of your system specs, but I've gotten used to the lag for scrolling. It's not a typical kind of scrolling as it has to redraw the entire map from scratch (it's not incremental). It's not Hubertg's fault, but rather Microsoft & NVidia have neglected this part of the spectrum for years. Not sure what ATI or Intel have done for their graphics acceleration as I don't have their video products.

if scrolling = move camera position, I also get that lag, or stuttering when you move the camera, especially when you have a unit selected. I also have Nvidia..
