Close, but no cigar

Gary Grigsby’s War in the West 1943-45 is the most ambitious and detailed computer wargame on the Western Front of World War II ever made. Starting with the Summer 1943 invasions of Sicily and Italy and proceeding through the invasions of France and the drive into Germany, War in the West brings you all the Allied campaigns in Western Europe and the capability to re-fight the Western Front according to your plan.

Close, but no cigar

Post by MrDave »

I have been playing Huskey since I bought the game, 2 wks ago, to learn as much as I can about the game mechanics. Admittedly, I have only scratched the surface.

1. I am managing the air war myself. I am moving the target hexes every turn as I move up towards Messina. Both Tact and Strat ground attack.
2. I have assigned HQ support units to my Divisions and Regiments.
3. I have dropped my airborne to capture Palermo.
4. My dilemma seems to be that I run out of maneuvering room at Messina. The Axis Def CV is very high. I end up with a minor victory.

What am I missing here.
Thanks for your insight.

Logistics? Well supplied and rested units fight much better.

Understood. Unless I'm missing something, logistics/supply should not be the problem. Resting troops with a short timeline could be problematic.

if you can't win on easy, don't move yet to normal or hard, first learn how to play, then play to win, before you move on to master

In the image above the Italian units actually holding Messina would be far weaker than the stack with the German paratroopers. I would have moved the British "16-10" unit, the Canadian "20-9" and something else with sufficient movement points the the hex south of Messina and hit it directly, including all the support and Naval support that I could muster.

Not in ANY way an expert at all (hardly a rookie) but one thing that really helps is shore bombardment by the naval task forces (not sure if you are already doing this) - you have to move the naval task forces in a hex adjacent to the target hex for them to get involved in the attack (and remember to move them back to their position to support the landing sites at the end of the turn)

Thank you Chuck B.
I'll have to read up on this option. In truth, I was even aware that was an option. Thanks.

Take a look at this thread: tm.asp?m=3995165

Seminole is explaining how it works (I assume it still works the same even under the new patch)

Thank you Chuck B. I used a couple of Amphib TF on the East coast up by Messina. I did win a major victory. I also used Dobey's advice in paying attention to the strength of the units assaulting Messina. I found the one line in the manual that reveals that Amphib TF can support with naval gun support.

Now to my basic question:

I drilled down the Amphib TF to see just what kind of firepower they had. I only found a text line: "Naval guns."

What info screen tells me what they contributed to the battle? Is there one? I did not see anything reflected in the Combat Resolution Screen.
Thanks for all you help, guys...and gals.

Not sure regarding the actual firepower (might be one of these more opaque WitW things)

I'm pretty sure I saw the naval guns mentioned in the combat resolution screen (similar to how asset artillery is mentioned)

I got couple times my butt handed to me by dastardly evil Germans in Op Husky, but got bit better and managed minor victory.

I just cannot get hold of how to use depots more effectively. [:D]

Old thread, but naval interdiction around Messina helps as the Axis then run out of supply.
