HMAS Stuart, AH Questions

Post by pnzrgnral »

Presently I'm working on a Babes mod with more historically accurate OOBs and such. Two quick topics, of which I'd appreciate your opinions. First: DD HMAS Stuart. Beginning Mar 45, she was laid up to convert to basically a cargo & troop carrier and was used as such past Japan's surrender. Her weapons suite was severely downgraded. Question: how would this be modelled, if at all? Would you convert her to an AG or a severely limited (weapons-wise) APD, or even an AP? Second: Using/modelling AH's (hospital ships). I don't recall any thread discussing theoretical usage of such, and my search turned up nothing (however, I'm not all that great using this search engine). My thought would be, if AH's WERE possible to employ within AE, that they could be used either in port or an amphib TF to increase percentile recovery of disabled LCU devices. I'm sure this can't be modelled within the game engine. Has this ever been discussed, let alone modded?

You can use the convert options to change HMAS Stuart from DD to APD (closest match IMO).

Basically you create two classes and add a "Bind" value to both of them, with correspnding "Convert from" and "Convert to" options ticked.

Re Hospital ships - I use them in my variant of DaBabes, which by coincident endeavours to create a more historically accurate OOB [:)].

My solution is to have hospital ships (I use the AV class designation for want of an AH class designation) paired with corresponding ground units composed solely of support squads (like a HQ unit). A hospital ship can move the hospital ground unit to a base and the ground unit's support squads may provide a boost to the recovery of the other ground units at the base. That is the theory. Requires some house rules, like AH and LCU must stay together in the same hex all the time. In the pic below is my take on AH-5 Solace of Pearl Harbor fame.

I have put a beta of my mod in the "Sharing mod ideas" in this sub-forum, I am still working on the "final" version (the new Paficia Bellum map got me started on reworking the map mod for my DBB variant).

Thinking it over, you can simply create a second class entry as APD type and have the DD version upgrade to the APD version. The conversion option is needed only there are more than one "target" types, like in the Wickes example from DD to either DE type or APD type.

Btw, in DBB HMAS Stuart already changes to a cargo & troop carrier - class 124 updates to class 125 in 2/45 (if I did not change the slots in my mod - can't remember). There are some changes in the armament and it gains 60 troop capacity, but remains a DD type. You can easily change the type to APD if you want.

LST, thanks for the input. Good idea using AH combined with an LCU-type support unit. I didn't notice Stuart had a 2/45 upgrade, I reckon that I didn't take a close look at the ship screen. My mod - as I said, more historically accurate OOB - is a slow, long work in progress; as of now I'm still collating a lot of data before I begin inserting it within a scenario file. I've already done some relatively simple things like altering ship upgrade dates, changed a unit nationality (Horn Island has an Aussie unit coded as US, e.g.). Biggest thing I'm concentrating is US Army OOB, and there's a ton of changes to make. I think DBB was a great idea and the changes made by the team have been great. BTW, which DBB variant are you using for your mod? I don't use -C because I don't do PBEM. -B is my choice.
