RE: GD 1938
Five players are starting another game 26th with some new house and MOD alterations cpdeyoung Bombur LJBurstyn erniescwitz and Ironduke if you are interested we can begin to gather enough players for what would be game 27 GD 1938.
Are we like late Rome, infatuated with past glories, ruled by a complacent, greedy elite, and hopelessly powerless to respond to changing conditions?
RE: GD 1938
Yes, IDuke, count me in. Where are we doing it at?

RE: GD 1938
Same old process collect players here then run it via dropbox, if any players want to play in game 27 then pick a nationality then we are good to go.
We have a change in play style in that their are no set victory conditions, bomburs victory conditions will add a historical context but they won't end the game, the game is won when a player or alliance of players force their opponents to surrender. The 2nd world war can be simulated by a house rule stating that only Germany Italy and Japan can Ally. Ernie has changed aspects of the political system to ensure US neutrality will be more historically accurate, for instance the US cannot influence minors. That prevents any early triggering of the breaking of neutrality. Bombur has done a couple of fixes on some equipment types like the British Mosquito that were mid war and the errors on them not discovered because games had not reached mid war.
I hope to get 8 players if possible, not everyone wants to spend 3 to 4 Hours working up turns on multiple powers. A hour or two is I think more manageable, and no restraints on playing turns though quick turn rounds would be appreciated, they are not a requirement to play.
I was thinking of having a ranking of players with some kind of handicap for higher ranked players, seems unfair on new players to have to deal with players that are not only skilled players but familiar with the GD 1938 MOD if anyone agree's and has any idea's what form the handicap should take then speak up, a cap on force strength perhaps, anyway its just a thought.
Nationalities available
Germany
Italy
Japan
USSR
France
United Kingdom
USA
China

RE: GD 1938
It is good to see new players for this great mod.
Some thoughts on the shape of Game 27 :
France and Great Britain probably must be played by the same player. France will have a quiet time of it after 1940 in most games.
With the turnaround we are averaging we will have a very slow game with even seven players. Players whose nations are inactive (USA and USSR) really need to play their turns promptly. These should be quick turns till these nations enter into a conflict. I certainly agree that quick turns are preferable; we really need to pick up the pace or we will have a really tough time ever getting past 1942. Game 23 has been active since late April 2016, so we are doing about a turn a week, getting us to May 1940. We may see 1942 by Spring 2017.
Each game we start implies a commitment to multiple years of play. We could shorten this significantly if we all watched Dropbox notifications and did our turns promptly.
I would be very interested in a "turn-a-day" GD1938. This would require dedication but it is possible. Imagine getting through a year of game time in less than two weeks. We need four or five players to do it, and I am more than willing to be one.
I don't think we need handicapping. We have many experienced players now, and new ones entering. Perhaps we should hesitate to have a brand new player take Germany or Great Britain.
Ernie has expressed his preference for saving the state of the game within a turn. I think this would make the multi nation players much more comfortable starting a turn. Things can happen over two to four hours of play, like an OS refresh!

I am not sure this accurately describes the current modifications? Perhaps Ernie and Bombur can address the current state of modifications and house rules regarding the behavior of the USA during the period of isolationism.Ernie has changed aspects of the political system to ensure US neutrality will be more historically accurate, for instance the US cannot influence minors.
The 2nd world war can be simulated by a house rule stating that only Germany Italy and Japan can Ally.
The second quoted passage is a quote from Ernie, which is a fuller description of the house rule.Only the Original Axis can ally with each other. Only the Orignal Allies & USSR can ally. USSR cannot ally with the original allies until attacked by, or attack the Axis. The Allies may not attack Germany, Italy or Japan, unless they are already at war with them. In other words, France and Britain may not attack Germany before Germany becomes at war with one of them. US gets an exception, and can join the French and British once they enter, if Britain and/or France is at war.
Ernie has expressed his preference for saving the state of the game within a turn. I think this would make the multi nation players much more comfortable starting a turn. Things can happen over two to four hours of play, like an OS refresh!

RE: GD 1938
Gents,
I would like to take Germany on.
Thoughts of the Game...I am ok with the ally restrictions if our goal is to "simulate" WW2. I am also very open and happy to play it sandbox style. I prefer turns to be done within 24 hours (with leeway, when needed), but that's my preference. If we have games where we are days between turns, then I'd prefer to play more games, lol.
Ironduke, you only have 5 for game 26? Can I be #6?

Hello lordlau1,
would like to join game 27. You, Chuck and I are already three players. So we might have two more players to start.
As you already have told your preference I like to say that my prference would be Western Allies (GB and France) or USA.
We have alreday played a game together: WoN-Aurelian, where I played Austria.
Looking foreward to meet you here on another battlefield,
best regards, Rufus

I would like Japan for a change. It has been a while since I led the quest for the co-prosperity sphere.

I can squeeze another one in I think. Happy to play any nationality.

Ok, thread update:
Germany: lordlau1
Italy:
Japan: cpdeyoung
USSR:
France:
United Kingdom:
USA:
China:
Unassigned players, Ironduke, Falco (no preference), and Rufus (prefers western allies)
That makes us 5. Let's get 3 more!

I will take the Soviets.

RE: GD 1938
I am wondering about trying to have France as a separate player country.
Have we ever done it?
Is it worth trying to find someone. When Rufus says "western allies" I suspect he thinks he will get France and Great Britain.

I dont think it makes sense to play France as a side of its own. But if someone wants to play it, why not. In this case I would prefer to play USA.

Not that I am going to join the game you are going to play, but I do have a comment.
I think it is a mistake to play more than 6 players, preferably 5 is the number you are looking for. More than that will result in longer times between turns. Just my 2 cents...

Agreed. I think 5 or 6 players is the best number for this scenario.

RE: GD 1938
Well I guess 5 to 6 players would be ok, but it looks likely that we will never have a French winner of GD1938 and that makes me sad for the French[:(]

With France being weak and one of the first majors being attacked by Germany I see no way that France might be a possible winner. If players of Germany and France would agree to keep peace for a long time, even if Germany takes minors in eastern Europe, France might have a chance to survive for a long time.
Same with Italy, that is too weak to play any decisive role in this scenario.

I will play Italy as Germany and whoever chooses UK can play France as well.

RE: GD 1938
So...some thoughts, Are we playing a strict game where it's Allies vs Axis or are we allowing individual victory and some choices? Say Germany didn't want to war with Russia right away or Japan didn't want to war with Russia? I'd prefer a little more leeway to see who is going to do well in the game.
I know Ironduke will play well because I've played him. If we allow some latitude then that helps make up for players whipping others and presents a challenge....similar to the game that Ironduke and I are in now.
Thoughts?
