Happy New Year and thoughts on BAB

From the first clash at Manassas to the epic confrontation between Lee and Grant, the Brother Against Brother series will bring new levels of historical detail and realism to the battles of the Civil War. This regimental-level game, created by the developers of the award-winning Forge of Freedom, builds on that game’s acclaimed tactical engine, adding scrupulously researched orders of battle, high-quality map graphics, command and control rules reflecting the numerous challenges faced by army commanders, and plenty other features. Beginning with The Drawing of The Sword – which recreates the pivotal opening battles at Manassas , Wilson ’s Creek, Mill Springs and Williamsburg – Brother Against Brother lets you refight the Civil War from start to finish.

Happy New Year and thoughts on BAB

Post by Ironclad »

I hope 2017 sees BAB return for its next instalment as its a game system with such potential for becoming a true classic running through the major civil war battles. Its significant that it wasn't one of the games that I instantly installed when I got a new laptop recently given that I felt that I had played through the possible permutations of the scenarios released with the game and was waiting for the arrival of the next one and the anticipated patch to address particularly some multiplayer issues.

As well as its potential, the game also has the great virtue for me of being turn based which I do prefer to real time games where manual dexterity or lack of can prove crucial during rapid movements.

In marketing terms Ultimate General did what I would preferred the BAB team to have done ie start with Gettysburg. Not only the biggie that tends to be beloved of so many civil war fans including myself but well balanced and one with so many different scenarios that can be offered. It would be great if the next BAB instalment was to be that battle and one might hope that the long delay reflected the team's decision to switch in that direction but realistically I'm reconciled to it being the planned Second Bull Run assuming that BAB does return for a second game. I was hoping we would have an update from the developers around Christmas or New Year so I hope things are alright.

In the absence of a new instalment currently it would be great if one or more of you expert modders could produce some additional scenarios and I remain in constant awe of what can be achieved by by the modding community. I do recall a number of you commenting on the technical difficulties of doing that given the existing program but if someone could work their magic it would be most welcome.

Anyway Happy New Year to all.

My wish is for Gettysburg. With it's map and three days of battle it would be and almost endless source of scenarios and mods. Unfortunately, Second Bull Run is our best hope but it will be a difficult battle to handle. Only Pope could lose a battle while outnumbering the enemy two to one.

The problem with producing new scenarios for the existing game is you are limited to the map they provide. Most of the little battles are just to small to do much else with. The only "big" battle is First Bull Run and they have already done a good job of covering all the possible scenarios for it. I made one for the initial Union attack on Jackson during Second Bull Run just to see if I could alter both the OOB and unit placement. But it was more an exercise in finding out how to mod than in producing an interesting scenario.
