Should I buy this game?

So a long time ago, on a computer far, far outdated I bought and played the original WITP. So now this is like the 3rd or 4th version and I'm sure a lot has changed. The question is should I buy it while it is on sale?

Is the learning curve daunting?

Are there decent tutorials or would I have to get on the forums and ask the folks who have played for years how to do things?

Is the scenario editor intuitive or a bunch of programing?

Other reasons I should or should not buy?

Tutorials: Meh. Practice, hard knocks, small scenarios and the forums will be more useful.

Is the scenario editor intuitive or a bunch of programing?

A bunch of programming, suitable to those that do not fear to go where angels fear to tread.

Other reasons I should or should not buy?

Should not: You have a spouse, job, kids or other hobbies. You enjoy sleep. You like thinking about things other than pilot training and aerial CV coordination.

Should: It's the finest strategy war game ever made. Not kidding.

You should buy this game because it is engaging, and because it is the best value for your grognard entertainment needs in existence. [&o] I've been playing this game with other human beings for over 6 months straight with no end in sight--much longer than any other game I own.

The learning curve is high in the sense that you will still be learning things about this game months from now; however, not so high that you cannot grasp the basics rather quickly. Furthermore, it has a good manual and a very active and helpful community.

There are lots of resources (check out the thread for beginners right here on this forum), guides, and AARs to help you learn.

The mission editor I comment on, someone else can chime in here; however, unless you are making significant alterations under the hood, or need to create art, I don't think there is a lot of "programming" involved.

You should buy the game if you enjoy massive strategical/operational/tactical warfare, logistics, and training in the Pacific Theater of Operations.

You should not buy it if you don't like those things, don't like hexes, don't like NATO-type counters, or prefer snazzy graphics, shoot-em-ups, or role-playing-real-time-shallow-immersement modern gaming.

Buy the game sir, it is very daunting and lots of depth and there is a lot of frustrating moments but when you at least come to the point where you understand core game mechanics and can play the game with at least a sense of what is going on, that's when it becomes your all-time favourite.

You should buy this game for all the reasons listed above, and simply because the people that inhabit the forum and post all the time provide hours of daily enjoyment with their posts alone. I have yet to start a grand campaign, yet I still find time daily to read about Gorns and Chickenboys and all the others who keep me informed, intrigued, and amused every day, and make me want to get cracking on the game.

Its referred to as a 'learning cliff'. To me though that's more because its not that hard to learn, but that there's just so much to learn. It will take much longer than months, but that's OK, because you don't need to know everything and like the rest of us you never will.[:D]

Sadly no, but there's so much more here that will assist you. AAR's and the folks on the forum. Actually much better.

It depends on your like/dislike of detail, micromanagement, depth of game, and much more. If you do make the jump and become immersed say goodbye to life as you know it.[:D]

It's time for me, once again, to set everyone straight. It's perfectly ok to capitalize Chickenboy, but if you are referring to a specific gorn, such as I, you should use the lower case. After all, you don't capitalize human, do you? If you are referring to the planet Gorn, capitalization is appropriate. If you are referring to my species as a whole it's kinda sorta ok some of the time to capitalize it. Now, when you use the term Earthling, you capitalize it for the same reason you capitalize "Earth", unless you're talking about dirt. So, if you wish to refer to me and capitalize it, you may call me a Gornling, or Sir Gornling.

Which is another way of saying it is a game that you will WANT to play a lot and will take a lot of time to play.

If you are comfortable with the time it will take and the setting (WW2 PTO) intrigues you, absolutely buy it.

The learning curve is not that high if you have already owned and played the original WITP. AE has added a lot of refinements that players wanted but the underlying game play is the same.

If you loved WITP but always thought "I wish I could just set patrol routes for my submarines" or "I wish I could set waypoints for my TFs" or "I wish I had an easier way to manage pilot training"... this game is a must buy.
