22nd NKVD Rifle Div

Post by 56ajax »

In the game the 22nd Motorised NKVD Rifle Division is based in Riga for the opening turn, with a TOE at 80% and experience at 51.

Historically however, whilst the rifle regiments existed prior to 22nd June, the division did not, as it was created as part of the Mobilisation plan activated on 23rd June. Furthermore one rifle regiment was in Kaunsas, one in Riga and one in Tallin and due to the quickness of the German advance these rifle regiments never actually made it together as the 22nd Div.

Thus by 29th June (part of Turn 2)the 22nd NKVD Div stationed in Riga apparently consisted of the 5th Rifle Regiment, 83rd Railroad Regiment, a Red Guards regiment formed from workers battalions and the 155th Escort Battalion. And if I am reading the reference correctly had no artillery or engineers. Furthermore it spent much of its time suppressing a popular revolt in Riga.

With all the above in mind, the 22nd Div as listed in the game:

Experience at 54 is probably too high.

TOE is too high if the Div didnt have engineers and artillery

Fatigue needs to be increased on Turn 2 as a way to replicate internal security activities.

The good news is that I am using Glantz as the source for the above, the bad news is that this seems to be the only source.

And then we have the problem of what to do with the rifle regiments in Kaunsas and Riga.

Thoughts, suggestions, comments please.

As I wrote in other thread, morale/experience for Soviet units is determined randomly in scenarios starting on June 22nd 1941, so in each game different divisions will be better (or worse). NKVD units get a bonus though.

As for the division's makeup and deployment it is possible to change it, but it would be up to Denniss to decide and alter scenarios for next content patch. The division in Riga should be reduced to 40% TOE, and two regiments should be added, if they are not present already.

Thanks Morvael, more than happy to wait for a response from Denniss, in the mean time I will keep searching for sources on the Soviet OOB because I have a feeling the OOB is under represented in the game.

No, but they look really good so I will check them out. Thanks.

So far I have

Companion to the Red Army, Zaloga and Ness
Soviet Army OOB in WW2, June to December,Martinez
OOB The Red Army in WW2, Porter

and am currently chasing

OOB of the Militaries in WW2 Vol 5 A and B, Pettibone

and what looks to be a very good series on Soviet Rifle Divisions by Crofoot, which only goes up to the 75 RD unfortunately.

It's possible to buy B in electronic form. A must be purchased as a physical copy. I have it.

Excellent. Thanks for that, I can stop chasing Vol 5A in electronic form (easy to search). I assume that Pettibone is accurate.
