Rivers and Roads

Can someone make a tutorial on how to use the River and roads tool? I'm always having so much problems with it I'm sure i'm doing something wrong...

This is what usually happens when I want to connect a river to another, or when I want to make a smaller river from a bigger...
Is there some hotkey I need to press when I want to make connections?

This is the usual result, only after a couple of minutes can I get it right...

That is normal, the fast drawing works for some designs, but when the design gets intricate it's best to draw each hex individually, especially with the rivers. The roads and rail I find easier.
