Michael and I are on our third restart with him as the allies and me as Japan. We are playing BTS Lite and recently, while playing as the Japanese in another game, Michael discovered some "problems" with the Japanese side that were - I guess a good word would be catastrophic. So Rinse and repeat. Again. Sigh.
Well - not to big a sigh. Michael was stepping on me pretty hard and I'd had an opportunity to run my economy into the ground and was trying to figure out why my economy sucked donkey-pooh when NYGiant59 made his startling discovery... lol.

So hopefully the major kinks are out. At least it sounds like both Michael and John think so and that'll be good enough for me.

I think for this AAR I'll do stories and seek to tell the game through the eyes of Masaki and his family. Inter-spaced within the AAR I'll toss in updates and when pondering strategy, I'll seek input from my fellow grognards

So I went after Hawaii in a big way - with two large task forces of carriers and I even tossed in a bombardment of PH. Throughout the Pacific I have mini-TFs scurrying here and there seeking to mop up the islands and establish a strong defensive perimeter - hopefully clear out to the Line Islands.

For the DEI I'm planning a pincer move with a back-door attack driving through Mindanao ant taking everything from the Makassar Strait to Timor and then work my way north. My other pincer will be the Malaya/Sumatra drive.

And I'll push into Burma but it'll be a bit of a mish-mash of units in this theatre until such time as Singapore falls.

Masaki Shimizu was returning home from his shop as the sun was setting deep into the west. Masaki, who was known for his willingness to help others and for always having a kind greeting to others, wore a frown as he trudged home. His business once thriving business had been doing poorly since the Americans had implemented their embargo upon Japan. Iron and steel, which had been hard to obtain on a good day was almost nonexistent since the summer of 1940. Masaki, always a thrifty man, had horded a small stockpile of scraps that were now all but gone. To help eek things out he'd gone in with three other businessmen to purchase an old Chinese tug that had been ready for the breakers at least ten years ago. Masaki and his associates had quartered the tug but since then there had been no opportunity to procure anything else.
Fortunately he had another business, supplying trees, ferns, flowers, and pots of various sizes. His wife and daughters made the greatest clay pots, with glazes and stains and colors done traditionally in a style that had been handed down for generations. And some of the paintings his daughters did for customers were praised and sought by customers from all over the region. But it wasn't the businesses that really had Masaki concerned. It was the change in the winds. These were not trade winds that painted the frown on his face. Masaki was worried for his sons. All six of his boys had joined the military, two in the Army and four in the Navy. Two of his sons were aviators - men who flew roaring fixed-wing aircraft up into the skies. Such a thing had been unheard of when he was a child. The best a person could do was ride in a balloon back then. No, these were not winds of trade, they were winds of war. A great storm-front was upon them. The young men and old warriors of Japan had seen opportunity to expand the empire and no force on earth would stop them from trying. Not even the great nation called America…

Captain Akio Shimizu was on the road at the head of his regiment as they marched from Shanghai for Wenchow. His regiment was part of the 19th Division, and they had been organizing and training for the better part of three months. It just took time, training, and more training to get men (mostly just out from their recruitment training) to work together and understand even the simplest concepts of movement in different types of terrain or under combat conditions.

But they march well, he thought to himself with a barely suppressed snort as he looked back upon the squads behind him. The men (they seemed mostly boys to Akio) marched smartly in the cool weather, as if aware of the locals eyes upon them, and they wanted very much to look the part of seasoned warriors to anyone close enough to see them. Or at least that was true for most of them. Here and there, sprinkled within the division, were soldiers that had been here for a while. Not a lot of them - probably less than ten percent - but they were here and had formed the cadre by which the officers had built and trained the division. The veterans, they were not interested in putting on a show. Chinese farming implements, bows, and staffs had done little to stir fear in their hearts, these veterans of earlier conflict. But things had been gradually changing. The Chinese troops were still a motley bunch for the most part, being poorly trained, poorly armed, and poorly supplied. But they'd been learning throughout the previous campaign seasons as Japan had pushed deeper into the lush and vibrant lands of China. The Chinese were quickly developing a backbone. Lieutenant-General Kozuki had noted time and again to his junior officers that Japan's armies needed to be swift and fierce - like a great wind - and blow through the wavering reeds of Chinese resistance before they had opportunity to grow smart enough and experienced enough to strengthen their resistance.

And so it had begun - the winds of war - a true war - a great war. Some said this would be large - a World War like the first that had been fought in Europe. Akio had only read about the first war in books but they were books that everyone had been scrambling to touch, read, or get their own precious copies of. Akio's twin, Daika, was a naval captain who had his own cruiser. This seemed a big thing to Akio, and while he was happy for his brother's fortune, he chafed with not a little envy. Akio sought his own opportunities to advance the Shimizu name and he was hoping this new war would open the door for him.

And so they marched, onward, forward, and a young captain had great expectations.

So on the 8th I put in a second day of strikes @ PH. I lost more AC than I wanted to for little gain against the battleships so the carrier groups are retiring from Hawaii. That was the big news item from the 8th. A base or two changed hands and I did a lot of clicking on the mouse.

Akio stepped out of the building that the division HQs had purloined for a quick series of meetings before the 19th continued marching for Wenchow. He squinted his eyes against the bright sun after having been inside for so long and then he took a few moments to stretch out some of the kinks in his legs and back from sitting so long. It was a wonder he wasn't developing callouses on his butt!

Yesterday the 15th Division of the 13th Army had arrived in Hangchow by rail. They were supposed to assist in the assault of Wenchow. The officers of the 15th figured they'd be ready to march in another day but Akio had spent an hour near the stations earlier in the morning trying to hunt up an aid of Lieutenant-General Sakai, the commanding officer. Akio had grave doubts that the officers of the 15th could get their division moving in less than a week. The 15th looked like a walking cluster-flock. Akio was just thankful that Lieutenant-General Kozuki, his commanding officer, was in overall charge of the assault on Wenchow.

The current plan was that the 19th Division would start out for Wenchow in the morning while Lieutenant-General Sakai and his 15th Division would follow as quickly as possible.

Akio pulled his canteen from his belt and took a long pull from it before returning it to the pouch on his belt. He took a few more minutes to walk about for a bit before returning to enter the building for more meetings. Later there would be opportunities to attend meetings of the meetings they'd just finished. Some things never change.

Location: CL Kitakami, near Guam

Captain Daika Shimizu, Captain of the CL Kitakami, looked out across the choppy seas through a brass telescope, a gift from his brother Akio, and watched as the CL Nagara prepared it's E7K2 search plane for flight. The radio had been abuzz over the last day in regards to enemy ships attempting to slip between the Bonin and Marianas islands as the fled from the current military operations in and around the Philippines and Mindanao. Daika watched through his archaic telescope as the engine of the search plane coughed to life and the propeller blades became a whir.

Daika grinned fiercely to himself as the search plane started to taxi for takeoff. He tried hard to portray the stoic calm demeanor of an Imperial Japanese naval officer while around his crew but in truth it was all he could do to reign in his excitement. The Kitakami and her sister-ships the Oi and Kiso would have an opportunity to showcase a new torpedo naval weapons platform that Captain Daika was confident would strike terror in the hearts of American naval officers once they heard about the new Torpedo Cruisers in Japan's naval arsenal. The Kitakami and her sister ships each bristled with 10 quadruple mounted torpedo launchers. They were capable of firing twenty of the Long Lance torpedoes in a single broadside!

Captain Shimizu and his crew had spent countless long hours in training to build their efficiency and combat speed. The Torpedo launchers were specially designed for use on the light cruisers. Daika and his officers had burnt the candles at both ends of the day, training on the maintenance requirements of the launchers and documenting problems and concerns to help design engineers come up with patches and fixes for some of the problems that had cropped up when the torpedo launchers and support systems had been initially installed. Standard doctrine demanded the torpedo cruisers seek night engagements, and the three torpedo cruisers of their task force had spent a good part of November practicing their formations and night combat operations.

Already their task force was gearing up to head for an intercept of the enemy merchant shipping based on reports from Chichi-jima. The plan was for their task force to surge ahead of the projected course of the enemy ships and then turn down the reciprocal of their prey's course. If they did this right it should be a head-on milk run and an excellent live-fire training operation for the crews.

Daika licked his lips briefly in anticipation and then collapsed the telescope and slid it into a leather custom holder attached to his belt. He had a ship to run.

Guam and Hong Kong fall to the Imperial Forces of Japan.

My invasion force @ Jesselton is landing.

The invasion of Davao should start up on the 14th.

Michael attacked @ Ichang again so two attacks in a row. Forts went down from 2 to 1. He's taking 5:1 in casualties but he's attacking with 5 Chinese Corps… It's kinda like the Alamo… I've added an AG of Ki-30 to attack the Chinese units but I don't have much for air units in this area right now.

I'm creating TFs that can haul about 20 tons of resources and running them from Port Arthur to Japan. This mod has the reduced capacities for the merchies, which means I'm burning more fuel than in stock. Anyone got any tips they'd like to share on building resource TFs? I try to go for speed as a common denominator, get the total load to about 20 tons, and add a pair of escorts.

Spotlight Sakhalin
I'll be increasing my port and airfield size @ Shikuka so that oil and resources between the two bases concentrate @ Shikuka. To that end I've set port, airfield, and forts to expand.

I'm also sending the 38th Construction Company, located at Toyohara, to Shikuka by rail.

I wonder what the difference is between Construction Engineer Squads and Construction Labor Squads? The 38th has 4 of each…

Spotlight Malaya/Sumatra
The 42nd Rgt is 30 miles east of its target - Georgetown. I think Michael is trying to offload troops from there as he has a TF there.

TF125 is unloading supplies and part of the 21st Rgt at Kota Bharu. The base is kinda bunged up from my assault but I have 3 Construction units there so it should not take too long to fix up the port and airfield.

The 56th (and 21st when unloaded) Rgts will run down the road from the fleeing defenders of Kota Bharu. Basically everyone is headed to Temuloh but I'm hoping to catch up and get in a good attack B4 the allied units make it to Temuloh.

The 11th and 41st Rgts are 30 miles from Alor Star, which has already switched over to Japan.

The Imperial Guards and all the units that had been at Battambang are now at Singora and unpacking.

Rebuild the 18th Division
I can rebuild the 18th Division in Malaya. I'm working to get all of the units for this division into one location and have the division rebuilt prior to an assault of Singapore.

The 1st Raiding Rgt (INFp) is @ Kompong Trach and headed to Kota Bharu also. I'll use them to try and get a jump in.

Not sure what your standard is as far as resource hauling go, but I move all available engineers from Manchukuo to Fusan (at least ones I am not buying out for elsewhere) and max out the port and airfields to try and direct resources to flow there and then just bridge the Tsushima Straight over to the Honshu. (I also pull resources out of Keijo). This is small amount in the beginning. I also drain Sakhalin directly to the small ports on the northern and eastern shore of Hokkaido and then bridge it out of Hakodate to Honshu. You can base all of your tiny, short legged transports at Fusan and Hakodate. You can also pull a few resources from Shanghai and then the return trip can drop supplies into China. Not sure there really is much else you can do.

Engineers:
The “name” of a device does not matter, only the device data matters. Any Eng unit can always build, but if it has Anti-Armor <1, it cannot reduce forts. If it has Anti-Soft <9, it cannot AV. If it is “named” Construction or Labor Eng, but is a Type = 23 (squad), it will not build. If it also has a-a <1, and a-s <9, it won’t do anything but eat (i.e., nothing but ‘bodies’). So there is a matrix of different Eng squads that represent a mix of abilities; build stuff, reduce forts, able to AV, some of the above, none of the above. DaBigBabes uses this matrix (according to our appreciation as to how it falls out) to help limit in-game tempo, by limiting in-game infrastructure.

Shore Party:
Shore Party is a sub-set of Nav Sup. Shore Party devices assist in loading/unloading but do not assist in repairing or rearming. Repair/rearm bases were very far and few between, for both sides, and thus with BigBabes, but both sides recognized an imperative for stevedoring and non-integral lift capability. Thus Shore Partys and a skoosh of code that lets them give an unload bonus to TFs. A Shore Party switch may be set for a Vehicle, such as an LVT-2 Amph Trac; It may be set for a Type = 24 Eng squad, like USA Port Srvc Sq, in which case it may also help build; It may be set for a Type = 23 Squad, like USA Amph Sup Sq.

Check the editor often, and become familiar with all the different kinds of units available. For example:

So IJ Const Labor doesn’t 'do' anything and, what’s more, has a larger load cost. This represents the large manual labor component (Chinese/Korean) that results in 1000 man Eng Bns/Rgts without giving much additional capability. Typical IJA Const Bns/Rgts have 32 Const squads (590 ‘men’, 1088 total with the support, etc.), but 16 squads are Const Eng, while 16 are Const Labor. It's a way to have 32 squad (1000 man) Bns/Rgts with half the capability of a corresponding 32 squad Allied unit.

Even though many squad devices don’t ‘do’ anything (and many Eng devices can’t assault), they are still marginally useful (apart from the Eng devices being able to build). Anti-Soft = 8 (typically) so these units may still ‘shoot’ during the pre-assault fire phase. They ‘shoot’ better than the default firepower of a 251 Eng or 252 Sup device, so that’s something.

Different load costs also allow Const Bns/Rgts to be tailored as to troop count and, therefore, load ability and troop population on atolls and small islands.

Wake falls after a heavy bombardment and I get to hear the sweet voice of Tokyo Rose.

At Davao my troops originally slated for an attack of northern PI are landing. SC and PB bombard with spit-wads, mud, and clay. I've got carriers flying LRCAP and I'm hoping to transfer over fighters from Babaldaob once I've captured the base.

I also nail one of the ships near Georgetown. Only an AMc but hey - it should get Michael's attention…

No attack at Ichang today. I'm sure those Chinese Corps are sucking wind and at the bottom of their rice sacks.

My TF is still unloading supplies after which it will gather up the 1st Maizuru Assault Div /3 and move off to the next base that needs "liberating."

I've moved over the AG of A6M2 from Kwajalein and I have an AG of PB that'll be flying in a Base Force to provide air support.

I have an ACTF with three CVE that are also supplying CAP until I can get my TFs out of the way.

I've spotted two enemy subs in the waters near Wake so I've got an AG of DB on ASW patrol. That plus my DD/PB escorts should at least force those subs to keep their heads down… Ever since playing Bullwinkle I've had a much healthier respect for subs…

Not sure what your standard is as far as resource hauling go, but I move all available engineers from Manchukuo to Fusan (at least ones I am not buying out for elsewhere) and max out the port and airfields to try and direct resources to flow there and then just bridge the Tsushima Straight over to the Honshu. (I also pull resources out of Keijo). This is small amount in the beginning. I also drain Sakhalin directly to the small ports on the northern and eastern shore of Hokkaido and then bridge it out of Hakodate to Honshu. You can base all of your tiny, short legged transports at Fusan and Hakodate. You can also pull a few resources from Shanghai and then the return trip can drop supplies into China. Not sure there really is much else you can do.

I do the same with Engineers - buying them out - and deploy them forward. I've tried manipulating base ports in the past trying to get that "overland" pipe working in Indochina and China but I never saw real results. I was thinking of bumping up Fusan enough to keep resources available for short-legged merchies to jump back and forth to Japan and do the same at Hakodate.

Lowpe! Thanks - that was exactly what I was looking for. I was searching the Forum for Engineers but failed to find anything like what you posted.

John 3rd - I'll probably Use KB1 in the Pacific while I establish my perimeter of islands and use the other KB as I back-door the DEI. My fear is that with the reduced loads of the merchies, keeping the defensive perimeter in the pacific supplied and ramping up the forts and airfields is gunna eat me out of house and home as far as fuel is concerned. Initially I was thinking about establishing my perimeter as far out as possible but now I'm starting to think maybe I ought to limit myself to the Gilberts, Ellice, and Fiji... I'm thinking the supply line to support New Zealand or the Line Islands would hurt me in the long run...
