NKVD Motorised Rifle Divisions

The NKVD created a number of Motorised Rifle Divisions in 1941, only one of which is in the game. They incorporated existing NKVD units and sometimes militia. They were short on staff, heavy weapons, supply, signals and transport (motorised being a misnomer). There performance was no better than a standard Rifle Division, which is being tactful.

2nd NKVD MRD was formed in the Leningrad area in mid October 1941 and was used for security purposes. Never saw front line combat.

8th NKVD MRD was a redesignation of a rebuilt 23rd NKVD MRD, and was assigned to the 21st Army in early January 1942. Redesignated the 63rd Rifle Division in July 1942.

21st NKVD MRD started forming 23rd of June and was kept in the rear at Leningrad until sent to the front line mid September 1941. Nominal strength on 23rd June was 5,915. In September it was redesignated the 21st NKVD RD (ie not motorised) and in August 1942 was redesignated the 109th RD.

22nd NKVD MRD is in the game and was assigned to the Northwestern front where it was all but wiped out by October 1941. Nominal strength on 23rd June was 3,904.

23rd NKVD MRD started forming 23rd June 1941 and was assigned to the Southwestern front where it suffered heavy losses. Remnants were used to build the 8th NKVD MRD. Nominal strength on 23rd June was 8,193.

Consideration should be given to including the 21st and 23rd MRDs in the game.
