On the airgroups page
- A means the computer may upgrade the plane type at no AP cost
- M means the play must do so manually, at 1 AP cost
- U means upgrade? will the upgrade happen next turn? will it cost any AP? I have never tried this option.

U is upgrade only, an air unit will follow a set upgrade path for the aircraft currently in use (no swaps). Example: unit has 109G-2, it will follow upgrade paths to 109G-6 and G-14 but not swap to Fw 190 or others.

Full auto is working quite good, except to rare units when there are some useless planes in excess. (Like short range recon or transports).

I would advise using 100% auto and eventually perform small manual correction if something weird happen. (But units modified in manual mode have to stay in manual mode or you may loose the benefit).

Manually managing the air force upgrade consume too much political points for the use.

Simply not true. And they're admin points by the way, not political points. If you manage things properly with those points, the only units you need to set to auto are the IL-2s as they run out in favor of later versions.

I keep most of my units at upgrade only. Full Auto is also ok as the swap function is not overly aggressive anymore (as in older versions and in WitW)
