Fire Group

Post by mccann98 »

Hi,
ASL player here and really enjoying this game. My question is this. In ASL, it is possible to form a multi-hex fire group when firing at a target hex. Is it possible to select multiple hexes and units to form a fire group in TOTH?

Thanks,
Mike

May be that's not much a problem to add the Fire Group option.

But I have always thought that the concept of the ASL Fire Group is not very logical. Let's not forget that each hex represents 40 meters. Thus, a Fire Group of three hexes means 120 meters with MMCs, SMCs, and SWs, perfectly coordinated in the Hardening of the Battle and firing all together simultaneously against the same target.

I think that today, with the individual systems of communication between the troops, it would be very difficult to achieve that. In 1939 I find it hard to believe this.

I have considered implementing fire group from multiple hexes in the past but its really difficult thing to do for the AI. As of now, I don't have any plans to implement it in the near future.

Sounds like a moot point anyway, but FG's always felt like you got the benefit without the risk. Spread 3 squads across 3 hexes, get the same FP on a single hex but only risk one (maybe more) squads in the attack to be pinned, broke or killed. Without FG, if you want the benefit of all 3 squads FP on a target, then you stack them and take an equal risk that the whole stack can be pinned, broke or killed.

I very much agree with what you just said.

It's a solution to balance the risk.

If you want firepower you have to concentrate your troops on a hex.

The fire group mirrors a situation where say 3 American squads are crossing open ground without smoke to attack a stone building. The 3 squads in real life would spread out to minimize risk. But all squads, or parts of each squad, would be firing at the building so the fire group idea makes tactical sense. Why not give the AI some bonus to make up for it's inability to use fire groups well - another squad or so maybe?

But the AI does have multiple adjacent units shooting at the same target. I have suggested implementing a modest bonus for subsequent adjacent units firing on the same target. The effect would be similar to the fire group bonus, at least something. That should be less difficult to implement? Worth a try.
