The realization of the two ships of the class is the demonstration that the Army was practically kept anaware of the ever growing US's sea and air dominance

but no way it is the 1st amphibious assault ship, I mean it is not even the 1st IJN one; that honor goes to Shinshu Maru, which was the world's first landing craft carrier ship to be designed as such.

OT: Shinshu Maru is some kind of torpedo magnet in all my games...

Not in my games. I equip all my ships with a rotating shield frequency. Not even the Borg have gotten thru them as yet...
