movement penalties

Post by terminator »

In the game, since the patch 1.07 there is movement penalties for tanks and SP guns:
◦ hills +3
◦ swamp +2
◦ snow (terrain not weather) varies depending on type and time of the war:
▪ Soviet medium and heavy tanks +1
▪ Ostketten models (Tiger, Panther etc.) +1
▪ Pz. III/IV chassis Ostkette (1/5/1944) +1
▪ Pz. III/IV chassis Winterkette (1/10/1942) +2
▪ German small & medium chassis/Western Allies tanks/Soviet small tanks +3
◦ forests +1

Here is an example :

First, I want to say that I am not set against penalties. But +3 is too much for the Wespe (only 9/9 but it is an other problem I will talk about).
Historically, I am not sure that the snow hampered a lot the movement of tanks. I had read that when the ground was frozen, it did not hamper the travel of tanks. The problem came especially at the time of the thaw with the mud.

Trucks and halftracks (251) also need movement penalties; it is hard to imagine a tank stuck in the snow while a truck or halftrack moves as if there was no snow. This needs more attention and until then I will use a house rule: In winter mechanized infantry and towed artillery can only move on the ''blue hexes''.

In Moscow 1941 scenario tanks are not that important because you need to break through defense lines and then take a large city; infantry with the right kind of support does that better than tanks.

I approve completely your words. Logically, the penalties of movement in the snow should be higher for trucks.
Movement penalties in the snow are laking for these units :
- halftracks
- Wurfrahmen 40 (bug)
- Panzergrenadiere (halftrack & tank)
- MechCorps (halftrack & tank)
- trucks

Hi folks,

in 1.08 winter penalties will be added to :

- several self-propelled guns like Wurfrahmen 40
- Panzergrenadiere
- MechCorps
- self-propelled artillery, anti-air and anti-tank with Pz. III or IV chassis follow the same winter rules as the respective tanks now

Adding snow penalties to transports is currently not possible as they cannot receive AutoUpgrades (which is a kind of a command set the program executes in those special cases).
Changing that is beyond 1.08. Its noted and will be considered in the future. Same goes for possible mud rules.

Hi Ronald,

For the 1941 campaign there will be a house rule ''In winter scenarios units with transports like artillery can only move on the blue hexes''. Since taking Moscow is mostly infantry job, artillery just needs to follow the infantry units.
