NKVD Border Detachments or Regiments

Post by 56ajax »

It's me again.

On the 22nd June 1941 these units, known as Border Guard Detachments, were responsible for border security ie control the movement of people in and out of the Soviet Unit. They were not intended to stop an armed invasion by a foreign power nor were they equipped or trained for that role. The complement of these units were up to 3,000 men, especially along the Western borders, and were equipped with some light arms eg 50mm mortars, machine guns etc. The TOE of these units was around 1826 men (and 120 dogs) though on average their TOE was 81% on the Western borders. In combat these units were no more effective (or mobile) than any other, though they were durable and appeared to keep their cohesion.

Like in the game, these units were disbanded (more likely renamed) in September 1941 and corresponding Border Regiments were formed, some of which were used as the basis of NKVD Rifle Divisions. These new Border Regiments had a TOE of 1,394 which is very close to the TOE used in the game.

Suggestions/Recommendations - to be more historically accurate you could start with the TOE as documented in Askey, but probably the most pragmatic thing to do would be to increase the complement by about 10% across the board for Turn 1.
Molotov : This we did not deserve.

Foch : This is not peace. This is a 20 year armistice.
