who is better as taskforce commander?

Post by ycwang »

I am really wondering about who is better to be a taskforce commander--an inferior ADM/VADM/RADM or a more capable ship captain? It seems to me that, as the Allies, a lot of ship captains are more competent than half of those on the admiral list. What decision will you make when picking a taskforce commander?

I don't mind the name or the rank, I mind the abilities.

Key abilities...

Open up the editor and look at one of the scenarios. You'll find that the Leadership and Inspiration values are amalgamations of the other ratings. As a general rule the best for the Allies are as follows:

Air Combat TF's:
Mitscher
Spruance
McCain
Montgomery

Surface TF's:
Lee
Merrill
Scott

Invasion TF's:
Turner
Barbey
I give approximately two fifths of a !#$% at any given time!

For some major taskgroups, I can understand to use the above said admirals. However, there are also lots of small taskgroups that need taskforce commanders. If I am running out of "good" admirals, will it be wise to use the ship captains instead of the mediocre admirals?
It seems that the captain of Lexington F.C. Sherman is better than all admirals in air operations. The captain of CA San Francisco C.McMorris is better than many admirals in surface actions. Are they also good taskforce commanders?

McMorris is excellent, as he has surface combat rating of 76, and I have also had great success with him.

And I favor FC Sherman as well, as he has an air ops rating of 87.

From what I've read since I got the game, my vote has to go to Mogami.

Yep, stick him in a transport TF. Far to dangerous to leave him in the rear commanding things ... :D
