I'm going to have check out those Battlefront games. :)

And I AM interested in getting Battlefield 1942, but I heard the game had some problems still.

Congrats to how well UV did!

If you play Hearts of Iron and read the Wargamer's review for it, you'll notice they're not really impartial about the game. Even ardent gamers on HOI forum thought it was too much.
To me it's rather a strategy game not a wargame. I still think it's a very good game though.

Congrats UV! I play HOI too but am disenchanted with the naval modeling. To me it would be a better games with some work done on that. HOI as it is, is sort of Starcraft meets Risk.

A strategy game is not a wargame????

Wargames come in a number of varieties:

- strategic games
- tactical games

I am very upset that the Wargamer chose games that are not even wargames!

My view is that it reflects how small and fragmented the wargaming communityr really is.

If non-wargames are included, then I would have voted for Barbie Doll :)

Battlefield 1942?

When I read that people were parachuting onto the decks of aircraft carriers and laying mines to destroy a/c taking off/landing, I wrote that one off right away... I like the idea of WW2 online, but not like that...

Well done to all the staff at Matrix, you guys were undersold with the bronze,it should have been gold but hey, at least it shows that you guys are a big blip on the wargaming radar.:)

HoI beating out UV was just plain silly...

but the reader's choice put UV ahead which is good. I would have put UV ahead of cmbb, even though it is a fine game.

Plus matrix games did well with the readers on developer of the year.

Overall, good showing.

Congrats and well done

a shame, but it does look like the "voteing" was flawed, the winners, were very well supported by the Wargamer

(greesh, Combat Missions looked like a cute little idea, but only have played the demo, but maybe it would be nice if the troops walked on the ground instead of though the air ? (oh well, you see that with Flight Sims too, planes land in the air and roll to a stop while still 5 ft up))

HOI ?, LOL I play it and even like it, but it is still about 3 or 4 patches away from being a game, once it works right, it may turn out to be a very nice game, if anybody is still playing it by then

(sort of like BTR, it is 10 times better now then when it first came out, but think only the 20 or so people who still play it, know about it, which next OOB will improve it even more, if it ever gets released)

but over all, great work guys and congrats, we'll get em next year

Congrats to UV on a well-deserved good showing! I've played most of the games in question, and my ranking would have been slightly different for wargame of the year:

1. UV
2. Strategic Command [great beer-and-pretzels fun]
3. Combat Mission Barbarossa
4. Hearts of Iron [buggy and inaccurate, but still fun]

My votes for game of the year would have been:

1. UV
2. Battlefield 1942

BF 1942 is not a "wargame" in the traditional sense, but it is a visceral thrill nonetheless, and it at least captures the basic notion of combined arms. Above all, it's great fun. But my ultimate test is what game did I spend the most time with? I don't play games constantly unless they're fun. By that standard UV wins, hands down.

1. UV
2. Combat Mission II
3. WW2ONLINE

Thats about it. UV has the most depth when it comes to lasting gameplay. Combat mission suffers from poor SP experience (aka lack of campaign) and ww2online...well it just kicks ***!:D
