I hope you have better luck than I did asking this question. I posted this question on 04/23/17 and never received an answer.

Isn't it amazing what a simple search can do? [:D]

Hmmm shouldn't one think that those improvements announced in 2007 are already impplemented in Toaw III?

After 10+ years I still find the AI challenging.

First, it is not an AI. It is PO (Programmed Opponent). Garbage in, garbage out. Per a human (unpaid) designer.

That said, the TOAW 3 patch was a big in improvement on things like flank protection, maintaining a defensive line, etc.

I am not sure what you getting at. Perhaps that is one reason you have not received a response. How do you answer a question like that? Perhaps some specifics would help. We the forum are all dedicated to making this classic even better, and suggestions are welcomed.

cheers,

Examples: Even in 3.4. the PO didn't dig in often. Moved fortified units around with no aim. Placed half a dozen units in one hex and let other hexes free, asking to be encircled. etc.etc. The AI (or: PO) is very weak in TOAW III. I say this as a declared TOAW III-fan ;) Although no AI without massiv boni can be really a match in such a complex game, improvements would be fine. [:)]

Those of us who are older should know by now an AI is just an opponent. Not the best opponent and certainly not the worst compared to some humans I've played. It's there to basically teach you the game mechanics not be something that can and will beat the pants off you you like Kerpanski or whatever his name is the chess player.

Took me many years to see this but an AI is not going to be the challenge that you are looking for in this lifetime I'm afraid. Now, it's not to say there aren't some good ones lord knows the Civilization AI perked up on difficulty can whoop the tar out of you played with maximum ai's. Conquest Medieval sold here is very good on 4 or 5 difficulty. Even HELL has some pretty good ai on skirmish mode and even the campaign from what I've read about those that can't beat it easily. Panzer Command Osfront gives me more challenge than say Combat Mission series.

So, what you should be glad about is that it has an ai at all and one that can delay and give you some challenge which is better than say World of Flames which has no ai at all and preventing me and I'm sure some others from buying it. But, I have to say "Making History I or II has some pretty good ai difficulties that make it challenging for me.

It's always good to question the ai and ask about it but don't expect and expert opponent out of the ai; you just won't get one in this lifetime.

Unofficially, I think that after TOAWIV is rolled out and all the graphics, user interface, PBEM issues are tested, there will be time and brainpower to look at the AI/Programmed Opponent, game engine, scenarios-in-progress, etc. Have you ever seen a newly developed game without a patch soon to follow?
Cheers,
