Allied AI sends US carriers to the UK going west?

Post by mariandavid »

My PBEM partner had to drop out (job changes are so annoying!) - so decided mid-42 to carry on solo with the Japanese. All went 'normally' until suddenly I saw a procession of USN carrier TF's making their stately way past Truk and Rabaul and mainly ignoring them. Then (I let it happen just to see) continuing west through the NEI and presumably to India and beyond but of course totally short of fuel in the end.

Is this an uncommon or usual behaviour for the AI? We were playing no mods basic campaign scenario.

This can happen yes, there is a thread about it here tm.asp?m=4194648 .

Unfortunately it doesnt say how to solve this problem other then letting them move to that destination.

Dunno if its quite the same for your game but it certainly looks that way.

Nick.

Edit: This doesnt happen in every AI game so I dont know if this rare/uncommon, not enough info or numbers to say anything about that.

I had that too just recently. A big surface combat taskforce moving from the South Pacific throguh the DEI to the UK.

Really ? I thought you cannot a game beginning as PBM play vs. the AI? How can one "convert" PBM to vs. AI?

Secondly: [:D]
Cause the same happened in an vs. AI game (me IJ) I was quite suprised even if used to "stranger" AI moves. So openened the other side to check and seems they got a homeport "UK" for some reason. I had no idea what could cause this as their were many bigger other ports to which US "biggies" would normally sail to as homeport. First I thought they would raid my oil etc. and then bug out asap but seems it was a transit (yes, their bombers hit some of my fields/ships etc). [:D]

Did you change their home port to an on-map base and send them there?

Not a clue how: My friend is the computer literate one and he did some signing off stuff - maybe changed ID and address to match mine?

Glad to hear I was not alone in this - and yes the obvious is to change their home port - I will see if Balbao works first and send them a tanker fleet.

If they are already off-map and in transit to the UK, it would be best to let them go there first. Changing direction while transiting off-map can get the TF stuck in a corner of the map.
I was suggesting that if the TF has not left the map yet the home port should be set to the closest friendly base with fuel and set the TF to go there (Direct and Absolute routing).

You mean change it to the UK ? Why would anyone do that to the AI [:D]
Mostly ppl change things to help teh AI - but ofc not an ideal solution.
Guess the other thread referenced might have more info.

Edit, guess (hope) the latest AI might fix this, what scen and AI are you using OP?
I think this happened to me in a game with OLD scen/AI..

Yes, I have had this problem before. Loading as the AI, sending the task force elsewhere doesn't work, as next turn it will just redirect to the UK.

Babysitting it to a base and disbanding it won't work either, as next turn it will reform, with UK set as its home base.

I never found a solution, and so ended up abandoning that game [:(]
