Is it better to attack Singapore from the south to take the island in the north in order to avoid any possible retreat?

Attacking Singapore from the South? nowhere to disembark except against the (big) gun batteries [:-]

And typically lots of mines. And maybe subs. And having little air cover unless you bring a carrier.

If you are not interested in attacking from the sea (south), attacking from the north is your only option (you don't have enough paratroops to take it). So the question is moot.

I meant that if u hold all the hexes around will affect the cv defense. If he has no hex to retreat

I might be wrong, but I think there is only one "walkable" hex to get into Singapore, so other than using the port, I don't think the Allies can withdraw out of Singapore, assuming a northern invasion.

Yes. Press the F6 key to see the navigable hexsides.
Green = passable by land
Blue = passable by sea
White = passable by both land and sea
Purple = fordable
Red = no passage

Which is why it wasn't done by the Japanese and why the British never considered an attack from the north.

Someday I will try that.

I will put it on the "10 things you should have done in War in the Pacific" list.

In my last Japanese PBEM, a battleship TF patrolling near Singapore somehow decided to react to an Allied TF there... the horror..

results were not pretty [:@] If I remember correctly I lost all the escorting DDs, one BB sank, another got +1 year repair time, the other BBs had to spend a few months in repair

The other place not to attack from sea is Manila...I had an opponent with overly aggressive TF cO react into it's guns. It was a thrilla in Manila...all ships sunk. I gave him a mulligan.
