Lame Newbie Question(s).

Post by spinecruncher »

Sorry for some very basic questions, but the first is having to do with sensors. What does it mean to select "Unit obeys EMCON, versus not checking that off and choosing the sensors individually? What is Emcon?

Cavitaton? I presume this has to do w/ air escaping and noise being made?

Auto vs manual attack? If you choose auto attack does this mean you can sit back and the unit AI commander will do the attacking, VS. manual, the player must choose when/where to attack?

Thanks so much for the help! I love this game and I am telling all my friends to get it.

Also when you make contact and the hostile (or other unit) is at 136 degrees, is this in relation to the bow? It would have to be right? I presume the bow is 0 degrees, and is represented by the arced half circle icon. This all makes sense to me except when I am calculating my unit versus the new contact like in the case right now in the sub tutorial, the contact is just below me at the south east -- if I am facing the bow, the contact is at about 10:00 o'clock, but I do not see that as 133 degrees so I am not sure I am understanding that. If an object is at 10:00 O'clock from my bow, what would the degrees of that be? 12 o'clock is ) degrees, and 3 00 o'clock is 90 degrees?. I didn't see where in the manual that was explained but then I am not reading the manual as much as I should which may be obvious -- I enjoy playing more than reading.....

Also this wasn't that fun that in the sub tutorial the red sub sunk without me doing anything but plotting a course. The AI automatically attacked it and sunk her. I followed the tut instructions to creep in the zone, that is all. It would have been more gratifying to pull da trigger.

Lot of info here:
tm.asp?m=3607586

and here:

I think you'll find answers to most of your questions there.

First off, he has been sent all the New Player links, as well as the PDF collection of all the manuals, addendums, patch notes, etc.

Second, on page 16 and 42/43 in the manual, Auto vs. Manual attack differences are explained in some detail. And this is why playing through the tutorials and videos in detail and paying attention to what they are telling you is very important. Because sometimes ROEs and settings for sides/units impact how automatic attacks are. Page 156 describes how the opportunity targets option dictates how a unit behaves upon encountering a hostile unit outside a mission.

Thirdly. cavitation impact on the game is explained in great detail starting on page 132 in the manual. And google has a great ability to find the scientific definition.

Maybe I wasn't explicit enough in one of the other threads...it would help a lot if you actually searched the manual before posting the question here. Your comment in the previous thread about not doing the hard work and then this complaint about the sub tutorial being boring leads me to believe that you just want to jump right in and start making things blow up. You can play however you like, but you'll get a lot more help here if you show the willingness to do some of the leg work yourself.

Not to mention I think I explained this pretty well before, to the point of what buttons to push. So Ballyhoo, go back and read what I wrote in your questions about the surface ship tutorial and read the pages in the manual. It's good. It will get you going.

The learning curve is large, but rewarding. Nothing prevents you from saving the game, then trying something to see how it works. If everything goes south, then just reload the save and try something different.

If you actually TRY the manual attack, the window that comes up will be more or less obvious as to what you need to specify.

Again, he has been told all of this multiple times in the previous threads. He admits he doesn't like to read the manual. It appears he doesn't like reading the answers to the questions in the threads he starts. Not sure there is much hope.

Hello and welcome,

1) EMCON = Emission control. if you select this, then the unit will follow the EMCON guidelines set int he doctrine window (e.g. "light up all radars, but keep sonars silent"). Otherwise you can take manual control and finetune which sensors you want to be active yourself.

2) Yes, see here for a short summary: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cavitation.

3) Yes. When you select auto-attack, the instructed unit will take initiative both on which weapons to use and how to maneuver to use the optimally. You can still override at any point.

4) Bearings of sensor detections are "true" bearings, ie. in relation to geographic north.

I would suggest keeping the electronic version of the manual (tm.asp?m=3418599) close at hand as it can help you with a lot of first-time questions. It's not really meant to be read end-to-end but rather consulted as necessary. Being in electronic form means you can easily search for what you need.

Also make sure to go through the new player orientation: tm.asp?m=3607586

Thanks!

I have visited the recommended sites that does not mean I have mastered all the info yet. btw P 132 does not discuss cavitation, not my P 132.It is about understanding depth layers which may be related though. Thanks!

For example, plotting can be a pain in the arse. I try and get rid of the plot tool and it sticks and I end up w all these plotted courses I need to delete. I think the manual is good but could have been written better IMHO.

Really...that's your response to three or four people taking you by the hand and showing you how to find the information and advising you how to learn the game. You are so lazy that YOU couldn't search the word "cavitation" in the manual yourself. Do you want someone to come to your house and hold your hand on the mouse and move it for you. I suggest you grow up and say thank you for multiple people wasting their time trying to help you.

Good God! Have you never seen google.com?

btw, did you read anything in the manual or the manual addendum from the docs I posted for you...obviously not.

"Set Course: Select a unit or group and either press “F3” or
select Plot Course on the Unit Orders drop down menu. Click
on the map at the desired waypoint location. Continue to add
waypoints as desired until the final waypoint has been plotted,
then click “F3” or Plot Course to finish."

Tell me you whether you are too lazy to read it or just can't understand it.

Cavitation about one or two page downs depending on your computer:

Some other good general submarine info here too.

There needs to be a little chill here. This is a game, not Norad or anything like that. What I read on P 133 was just a mention about cavitation but the context was about layer. I used the PDF search tool so that page 133 is not, how did you say ' all about cavitation."

Some chill would be good. And I am pretty sure I said thank you at some point, maybe not every post.

Edit, you said "in great detail." but who cares. I want to have fun with this game. If my posts bother you don't read them or do not respond. IF you want to provide info, your not my CO, just answer questions, chat friendly, or don't play..

"When these partial vacuums bubbles collapse, they produce...."

AS I asked in earlier, is cavitation like air-escaping. I think that is exactly what it is -- and when air escapes from a vacuum that energy has an acoustic signature. Clearly more relevant for subs but also for ships that need some stealth. Thanks for the link!

Just like you can flaunt your laziness, I can flaunt my ability to call you out as an ingrate who makes any community poorer. Your responses show a complete lack of self-awareness and common courtesy. And I will call you out for it...every time.

I try to help people who want to help themselves and not waste people's time. I pretty much had you pegged as one of those people who just don't have the capacity to understand the game. But figured maybe I was mistaken on first impression. But feel free to keep wasting people's time, and I'll feel free to post right along side so other people don't get sucked into your dark hole of time wasting.

you have it all wrong. These forums are to chat about the game and to ask questions. I have violated no protocols here. There is no rule-set that says I need to read the entire friggen manual before I ask any questions. I did nothing wrong here except ask questions that sure, I could probably do all the homework and get all the info but then what is the point of a forum and asking newbie questions. It is unfortunate wood that you are so arrogant and self-righteous about a game, a game. Get a life dude. It's a game and I have questions I am allowed to ask any question I want to and you can answer or not. But why do you have to be a dickhead? It just reflects on you. Let me guess you have no life do you?

Show me where I violated some rule or protocol? Can't can you? How dare you chastise new people trying to learn a game. The community should come down on you for that I had legitimate questions and I went to the correct forum I even labeled my thread "lame newbie" You could a stayed away, but you chose to be a dickhead, probably bc you have zero life. guess what, I worked all day and came home in my free time to play a little. What did you do today? I am sure you are an angry little man in your world.

Back away for a week and read the material recommended to you. You are getting too close to a specific issue. I started that way a year ago and then understood a week off will allow the player to come back with more playing time and formulate questions in a constructive manner. There is no harm ns losing a tutorial or a small community scenario. That's why they are released. But study the basics via these resources so you can enter the larger (LIVE) scenarios with confidence. Gary Kasparov would get his head handed to him without a few weeks of study. Don't be so hard on yourself. Nor us.

Sure Kevin, it is just that sociopath got under my skin a little. No one should be attacked or degraded for asking questions. Obviously newbies are going to have questions or not quite understand something right away and so the message board is supposed to be a place where one can ask ANY question on the game, especially as I labeled the thread "Lame Newbie." So yes, I will cont to read the manual and watch the videos and study the links, for sure. But to have sociopaths attacks people trying to learn the game in a "Newbie" thread, well let me back-up, only sociopaths would berate someone and try to degrade someone in a newbie thread asking basic questions. OR:

HAVE A BIG STICKY LETTING PEOPLE KNOW NOT TO CREATE NEWBIE THREADS OR NOT TO ASK QUESTIONS UNTIL THEY READ ALL THE MANUAL AND WATCH ALL THE VIDEOS.

Sorry I am a 50 y/o man and I have a whole other life here that only allow for so much time in a day and I am trying to learn as I go along, reading, asking questions. Where I come from, I would never treat someone like sociopath treated me for asking questions, even if they were stupid. HE could have ignored them.

BTW, thank you for your sound advise. I am not in any disagreement. But I should not be precluded from asking questions, no one should.

There is no protocol. But common courtesy, which you seem to lack, is that you make some effort to learn the most basic parts of the game yourself. Things like auto vs manual attack were explained to you three or four times with no acknowledgment other than coming back in and ask the exact same question again. How many times should people answer the exact same questions before just throwing up their hands. I bet you have been shown the links to tutorials, manuals, notes, videos, etc. directly or indirectly 5 or 6 times, yet you come back in a an hour or two later and say you went through it all.

Do you remember me saying in the other thread you should look at the PDF documentation and then you came back in two hours later and said you not only read that, but watched the videos and played some scenarios. All that in two hours? I saw right then you were just going to lie about using the manuals and tutorials. I stopped cutting you slack and want to make sure no one else wastes time with you. I actually wonder if you are just putting us on. Would anyone have the balls to really treat people trying to help them like that? Is there someone really that immature trying to play this game? What is the advantage of helping you? Just more and more questions that you should answer yourself? Right now, I see no reason for anyone to try to help you. Anyone else can do what they want, but I want it clear you refuse to help yourself.

Also, your approach to learning the game shows complete disdain and disrespect for people trying to help you. The fact you can't even google "cavitation" says a lot by itself. Do you have no consideration for the people trying to answer your questions. How many times should you ask a question before everyone gets tired of responding to you? How much time should anyone take to help you when you won't even look up basic commands. Did you not know how F3 works, even though its one of the most basic commands and explained clearly in the manual and in at least one video. After supposedly looking in the manual, watching the videos, and playing a couple tutorials, you still claim to not know how to use it? I would be fairly ashamed if I thought I was wasting people's time like that.

You can ask any questions you want. But actually read the answers and take the advice. If you don't, I have as much right to call you out on it. Your a 50 year old man...act like it. The fact that Ultradave actaully answered your question and then you came in and asked the exact same question again says all it needs to for me.

btw, new players get questions answered all the time here. Players go to great lengths to build documentation, videos, and tutorials for new players to use. If you refuse to use those resources as part of getting a question answered, that is where I'll call you out as lazy and inconsiderate. Just because you can't bring yourself to read and listen to advice doesn't others can't or won't.
