Some impressions

Post by spinecruncher »

I can swear I remember, even though it has been several years, that in TOAW 3 I could point and click a unit to move or attack like in most turn based game. I am having a heck of a time figuring out the mode of this game in the movement/attack phase though. I have watched the first couple videos and the one described attack, and shows how I could if I wanted to attack a singe unit outside of the plan attack mode like in most turn based games.
But it is not working the way the video described it. I thknk the video indicates that for a simple attack I can just select the defending unit, click the desired loss level and then for a simple attack in the upper left screen there should be a double yellow flag that I can click on and by that the attack will commence. This has not worked for me though. I click on that double yellow flag and nothing happens except the flags change to two crossed daggers, then to a grid for objectives but no attack occurs.

So I like the old way of being able to attack, by just doing it.

Another thing is graphical issues. I find it difficult to move around the screen. When I bring my curser to the edge on the top I get the red arrow and this can move around; but when I bring it to the bottom of the screen I get no red arro because the windows bar blocks it out. So if I move my windows bar to the right or to left of screen then it blocks there respectively.

Also I seemed to have lost the mini-map and I cannot find where to turn that on.

Any suggestions? thanks

The 10-phase turn system is the core of TOAW and it's been that way since the game was created. Meaning that you could just select units and attack like any other IGOUGO turm wargame, is just that if you don't take in account how much your units have moved before the attack you are gonna burn you turn very quickly and not gonna have great results in the game [:)]

To attack an enemy unit you first have to, having the adjacent unit selected, right click on the enemy as if you are moving into that hex (that is occupied). A little orange/red arrow would appear on your unit icon pointing to the enemy unit. After doing that you can click the "resolve battles/end turn" button and the battle will resolve. If you did not plan any battle your turn will end.

I think you may have the mini map set to hide, to restore it click the triangle button on the left and there you could choose which panels are showing/hiding.

Yeah the mouse scrolling is not very comfortable. I prefer to use the keyboard arrow keys. You could also drag-drop with the mouse left click.

All these responses helped me. Thanks! Still can't get the red arrow going on the bottom of screen and I think there is something with the screen settings, but the arrow keys navigate me around okay.

You mean the scroll arrows? Yeah something is going on there on the bottom. Sometimes I can't make the arrow to show.

I may try bumping the info bar up a little bit to make it easier for the bottom ones to show.

As long as I can bump it back down!!! I have the map move keys mapped to another device, so I never give a thought about these mouse move techniques. You really learn how to stop being so dependant on the mouse for everything.

But one sure thing, you can't please everyone!

Not sure if this helps for what you have in mind:
Have you tried the highlighted two settings in your Player Options to get point and click? PDF Manual, page 12.

If I set Menu Show Delay = 5 and Moving Selects Next Unit = Off, then I need only click twice to move and attack with a selected unit: (1) right-click once on the hex next to the enemy to move my unit there, and then (2) right-click once on the enemy unit to set the attack. All without the right-click menu.

You can do this with multiple units. The attacks you set will be resolved in the Battle Resolve phase.

You can still fine tune the attacks in the Battle Planner if you wish etc., or do with just these two clicks.
