Overrunning Airfields

Post by Dr. Foo »

In TOAW III and all previous versions, when a ground unit overruns an airfield, all the planes relocate to another airfield. This always bothered me, I mean, not one plan destroyed...really! I hoped that TOAW IV would fix this and allow the overrunning unit to destroy some planes or at least, knock the air unit into regorg.

This does not appear to be the case (unless I've missed something). Are there any plans to implement damage to air units from overrunning forces?

Thanks for making a great game even better!

Apart from reorganisation... NO I am afraid; however, Bombarding an airfield causes damage.

Yes, bombarding will cause damage, but is it crazy to think that a unit overrunning an airfield would destroy a few planes?

This is important when playing any modern Korea scenario. The DPRK will attack several airfields in the opening turn with SF and Guerrilla units. Destroying as many planes as possible is critical for NK, but if just moving a unit to the airfield only results in the entire air wing moving and remaining undamaged, it's makes the attack moot. In the end all the SF and Guerrilla units will be mopped up and destroyed in a few turns, so I don't feel like I get any use out of them other to cause some minor behind the lines chaos.

This is an IGOUGO game. That's an abstraction. In reality the planes aren't going to sit there and wait for ground forces to walk into their hex. They will reposition faster than any ground units can move.

Well all depends on the situation. Be it during a fast advance or by surprise or by decision of HQ the planes were caught on the airfields during WWII. Wasn't very often and rarely led to anything more than organizational chaos.
Plans are worthless, but planning is essential.

TOAW should not be changed on this one. Commandos taking out a few, sure. Due to lack of fuel, destroying your own planes or leaving them at end of war and hopeless situation, sure. But divisions approaching airfields finding all the planes parked and scrambling to leave as soon as someone finally recognizes the approaching foe? Hardly.

One opinion anyway.

Totally agree - on the scale of game this is not feasable. But maybe increasing organizational penalty by 20%?
