Identifying Formations on the Map

Post by basilstaghare »

Regarding large scenarios with multiple armies, corps, etc.., is there a way to graphically identify formations on the map?

I know about the "F" hotkey which helps, but it would be great if there was a way to highlight whole formations on the map to quickly identify units of the same corps or army...

Thanks.

If you select one unit on the map, then other units in the same formation are marked with a steel ring on the map.
I don't think multiple armies or corps are shown this way.

A way to see the locations of all formations is the Formations window (2nd button on 3rd row in the Units tab in the Buttons panel).

For example in the Kaiserschlacht 1918, the Formations window shows shows army/corps level formations, and the Formation report (hotkey F or rightclick menu) shows units in one corps.

Edit: didn't mean "whole armies" but "multiple armies"

You probably mean with some color differentiation? I think dc3 uses that

Yes. Thanks. The steel and yellow rings identify the unit and sub units. The formation button and F hotkey identify the hex locations. Is there a way to actually highlight all units within the same formation on the map though?

Thanks.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean.

The yellow ring marks the selected unit. Steel rings do not identify subunits of the unit with the yellow ring but other units belonging to the same formation. If you select one of those with a steel ring, then that one becomes the one with the yellow ring still in the same formation.

Make sure you have set Formation Highlight = Visible to see the steel rings (in the Options menu), PDF manual page 29.

I think it is not possible to use different colors than yellow and steel or highlight multiple armies at the same time if that is what you mean.

If you are having trouble seeing the originals, someone has already made some different ones here [if you can do a mod]:

It would be nice if the game had some (toggleable) way to view the formation hierarchy, not just nearest formation but superior HQs.
To keep units together in large scenarios.

If that matters at all at the scope the game runs at?

The highlights are not only subunits but everything in the formation.

Maybe Im not being clear...example: When playing a large scenario such as Directive 21, it would great to click on a corps or army level HQ and have all the units (Divisions, etc..) associated with that HQ "light up" (rings are fine) or be highlighted in some way. Its a bit tedious going back and forth between the formation report and the map to locate the associated units. Thanks.

I wish there was something like the Commander's Report in the War In The West / East games. That is an incredibly useful tool in those games.
