Bug: TOAW4 doesn't handle Unicode characters in user folder name

Post by stolowski »

Hi,

New TOAW-player here, TOAW4 is my first game in the series.

TOAW4 doesn't seem to handle UTF very well when it comes to user documents folder. The name of my Windows user is "Paweł", therefore my user's folder are under D:\User\Paweł\... This posed issues with New Game -> Default Directory / Theather select option. I could only select a specific scenario dir (e.g. WWII), but not the top-level directory; the Theather selection wouldn't work, showing garbage characters and invalid/borken scenarios errors. I resolved this by renaming my user, the folder and tweaking Windows 10 registry to point my user to the new folder (with no UTF characters) - that made TOAW happy.

Pawel

a screenshot, as well as a crahlog or dxdiag would have been quite helpful. I take it your OS language is either PL, CZ or SK perhaps? As for the installation directory/partition, that's the way it is with the actual installer (see other similar threads) that it dumps it in \Documents\My Games\... as for UTF-8, I personally don't have problems on my side (on installation is on a German Windows OS).

I would definitely be interested in more information. I've gone to a lot of trouble trying to troubleshoot this issue. I've even set up a Chinese user and switched my computer (briefly) to Chinese with no issues.

I've just installed TOAW4 on my second PC and hit the same issue again with my user name "Paweł" (yes, it's polish). I've made a couple of screenshots and have dxdiag log file, but I'm not allowed to attach them nor include external links on this forum yet, since I'm a new member. I'll retry in a few days when hopefully this restriction is lifted.

UPDATE: ralphtricky, I've sent you a PM with a few more details (links).

Dzien dobry Pawel!

You also can dump them in a .ZIP into the cloud, e.g. Dropbox and link it here.

I don't have Win10, so I don't know some of the finer settings, e.g. local language/system settings and where to change them I am afraid :/
