Will it work in Windows 10?

Post by Red2112 »

Just wondering if GoA will work on Windows 10 at 1920x1080...

Thank you!

Red2112,
Good question. I see from other posts here that you should run it in Win XP mode and should match the resolution in the game that your monitor is running at. I'm wondering if it will work with 4K monitors with Windows 10. I like that it's WEGO.

Hi Omnius,

I took the risk and bought it anyway. Installed it on W10 (x64), Guns of August is v1.23 installer, I then downloaded the two updates (v1.32 and v1.34) and Installed them without launching the game. Game seem´s to work fine although in my set-up (1920x1080) 16:9 monitor, it dosent completly fill my screen...

There´s a small area at the bottom of the screen that´s not filled in. My guess is that it has to due with the 16:9 format, not sure though. The game show´s in windowd mode by the way. Max res you can choose in game is 1920x1440.

You can also choose to use the original counters/map or alternate (mod) which is cool.

Since Iam using 1920x1080 (16:9) Iam ok and happy how it looks/works.

Hope it helps in some way.

What I find strange is that the earlier release "Campaigns On The Danube" (2004) is supported by W10 on it´s product page but Guns of August (2007) only supports W7 acording to the product page [8|] Being a newer game (3 years newer), it dosen´t make much sence.

Great system (WEGO) BTW, love what Frank Hunter has done on all three games. Will get CotD next week too.

Happy holidays,

Red

Red2112,
I'm glad that the game is working for you. I do love Frank Hunter's work since he's done so much with WEGO. I'm really disappointed he dumbed down his classic Campaigns on the Danube to IGOUGO, now game isn't worth getting or playing for me. I used to have it long ago when it first came out.

I may decide to try GoA hoping that I can get it to work on my 4K monitor. I'm rather disappointed with the Commander The Great War game, a rather poorly programmed simplistic gamer with an atrocious AI that has to cheat to be basically noncompetitive.

Red2112,
I decided to bite the bullet and get GoA. It does work on my 4K monitor. I got the two updates plus the counter set. I have to decide if I want to go with 1920x1080 which cuts off a bit from the bottom of the screen but gives me a full screen from side to side or the 1920x1440 which basically gives me the old 4x3 resolution look but gives me a more square map area to look at. I'll probably opt for the 1920x1440 since that seems to give me the more square screen so I can see a front better.

Ironically I helped Frank beta test this game before Matrix took over. I was going to tell Frank that I thought Gallipoli was in the wrong hex, thought it should have been one hex to the east where it would be more isolated and wouldn't require so many units to surround it. I'll have to see how that works when it comes time for Gallipoli.

I love that it has hotseat mode. Now I can play it solitaire since AI's don't tend to be worth playing against. With WEGO hotseat solo can be a gas.

This game looks much better than Commander The Great War, wish I'd just gotten this first and passed on the other. However I was a tad worried about whether it would run on my 4K monitor. I haven't even had to set the exe to run under XP. I just ran a few phases of the first scenario to make sure it worked.

I have all three of Frank Hunter's games running well in 'Windows 10'.

I am playing the latest Matrix issue of 'Campaigns on the Danube 1805-1809', v3.05, and it is definitely WEGO against the AI. It has an elegant command system operating through sub-ordinate commanders and delivers a very good representation of Napoleonic warfare. It is not prefect and the transfer of the older game into a newer package has brought some problems, but updates have resolved most of it. There is a counter and map mod provided by Chemkid, which transforms the 'look' of the game and adds to the immersion effect.

Games are a matter of taste, but this is one of the best games that I have on the HDD.

When I finished the Opening Guns scenario and click "End Game" (minor victory), instead of "Continue", the game show´s "Busy" and stays there. I then close the window to exit (I waited awhile but nothing seems to happen).

Is this normal?

BTW, great game!!! Having alot of fun with it! You do have to know how to manage those CP´s on HQ´s [:)] Among other things!

It's a great game, best WW1 game IMO, well worth buying.
