Looking for a certain game...

Post by countrboy »

I'm wondering if anyone knows of a strategy/wargame which mostly revolves around you giving orders to AI controlled units, who then do their best to carry out those orders?

So rather than moving the units or counters yourself, you might simply set a target destination and leave it at that? Kind of like an instruction along the lines of "2nd Panzer division - advance and capture Smolensk", or "General Ewell, take Seminary Ridge" and the AI does the rest. It can be any genre or era, not necessarily WW2.

Take a look at Piercing Fortress Europa and Campaigns on the Danube.

Thanks Yogi, Campaigns on the Danube seems to have that element of giving orders to subordinates and leaving it up to them. Reviews of Piercing Fortress Europa didn't tend to indicate this element of gameplay was present though.

$24 (Australian) for Campaigns on the Danube, which was released in 2004, seems a little steep...

Also check 'Command Ops' By Panther Games real time but can be paused for orders.

It's almost exactly what you're describing...

Flashpoint Campaigns Red Storm is worth a look also You set way points and the units do their best. It's WEGO

Thanks for the tip re Command Ops. I did give it a go a long time ago but gave up (probably should have RTFM). I'll take another look.

The new fully supported version of Command Ops 2 is available as a free download at Lock-n-Load Publishing:
Command Ops 2

Lots of new DLC available too.

Command Ops (1 and 2) and Flashpoint Campaigns are more at a tactical level - is there anything at a more strategic level?

Appreciate the input by the way.

I agree Command Ops 2 - the joke on the forum at one stage was that the game mostly runs itself!

The engine is a free download at Lock 'n Load or via Steam. It comes with three or four free scenarios. So you can see if the game is what you want. If you want more though the DLC comes at a price.

The game mostly covers operational level battles rather than campaigns. But it has some good DLC for the Battle of the Bulge and Market -Garden

Eagle Day to Bombing the Reich, but you do have to assing the elements to each ATF. In a similar aspect Battle of Britain II could fit in there aswell, but most are at a tactical level. Another could be Command Modren Air Naval Operations. Outside of Matrix you would then have Point of Attack 2 and Tigers unleashed, with both you act as the TF commander. Site is down at the moment (server) but will be up and running again ASAP.

Operational/Strategic level will force you to look at things like Victory II, Hearts of Iron, To End all Wars, Pride of Nations, Making History II and the Commander series to name a few.

Take any wargame, tell the commanding officer not to conquer that objective, and he obeys.[:D]

hmm..How's about Command: Shifting Sands? great strategic game but I'm not sure about the Ai thing. But isn't it nicer to do it all by yourselves, I mean it's the point of the game, having fun along the way!

The only downside to Command Ops 1 and 2 is that they've never updated the engine to allow for font scaling. If your font scaling isn't at %100, not over, and not under the gui is hosed.
But I have very fond memories of playing the first title 'Red Devils over Arnhem' at work, with the sound low. :)

Field of Strategy. Free game, cost nothing. Home page seems to be down at the moment.
You know what they say, don't you? About how us MechWarriors are the modern knights, how warfare has become civilized now that we have to abide by conventions and rules of war. Don't believe it.

Is this the Field of Strategy game you are referring to?

The Operational Art of War IV has a feature where you can assign orders to the AI to control whatever force you want. I don't have it yet so I'll let someone who knows more elaborate.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. I'm giving Flashpoint Campaigns Red Storm a go and enjoying it thus far. Also have downloaded and installed Command Ops. It's all a bit tactical though and I think I have a preference for strategic games over tactical ones.
