UI suggestions

Post by Zakhal »

After experience from UVs interface, ive bin thinking few improvements:

(1) Color coded statistics for airgroups etc. (changes from previous turn)

white: still same
red: diminished
green: improved

It would make easier to check tens and dozens of different airgroups in witp and instantly notice (without been forced to remember what the number was in last turn) how the current setup (mission, altitude, flyingtime%,etc) is effecting the group when it comes to fatigue, experience, etc.

EDIT:
Instead of colors (+) (-) could be used
(i.e)
Experience:68 (+1)
Fatigue:25 (-2)

(2) invisible panels to check airplane radius etc

When you move mousecursor away from the airgroup display panel (into the map), the display panel fades into almost invisible so it doesnt block the view of the map (and i.e airplane radius). You can still see the panel (its not totally invisible) and once you move the mouse over it, it turns totally visible again.

This way it would be *easy and fast* to check where my planes can reach and then go back giving the orders. Not to mention its a neat effect.

EDIT:
To the panel thing, instead of turning it invisible, one could just right click (and hold it down) on the map area and the panel would instantly be removed. And as long as he would hold the right button down he could see the map and move it by dragging.
Once he releases the right button, the previous panel would instantly return.

What do you think?

I think both of your ideas are brilliant, especially number 1.

Here are a few minor UI annoyances I would love to have fixed in WiTP:

1) When building a TF manually, why does the ship list bounce around? To be clear, while selecting ships, sometimes the list jumps inexplicably, and you have to scroll back to where you were to continue.

2) Please, when you select a "Sort" choice, please scroll the list to the top. It is, IMO, poor interface design to force the user to scroll the window to the top after they have elected to change the "Sort" choice.

3) Please have the program "remember" my personal choice on how I like to view certain screens. A simple registry setting will do the trick. IOW, when I view the Ship Availability screen, I have to hit the "ETA South Pacific" Sort Choice, and then scroll to the top- every single darn time I view this screen. Admittedly, there are times where I might sort by "Status" or "ETA Truk/Pearl Harbor", and I'm not saying every user will want to view it the way I want to- just that if the program would take a second to remember how I like to view it, I could stop fighting the interface and get down to running my war.

These aren't big things, just little polish items that would really make this game a classic.

This drives me nuts too.

We have to be nuts to invest as much time as we do in UV, at least that's what my wife says.

How about just a simple range finder, click one hex, click another hex, and range shows up ... simple and VERY useful.
