Whoa!

SPWaW is a tactical squad-level World War II game on single platoon or up to an entire battalion through Europe and the Pacific (1939 to 1945).

As much as that was one of the most insensitive and cynic remarks I've seen for a long time, Ross' call was a bit harsh.

After all, the AOW Forum is not the place for people with tact and manner... :p

It looks like Ross came to the same conclusion. At least we now know that there is a line you can cross in AOW...somewhere. :D

I'm also guessing that someone is taking a closer look at the language filters today. ;)

Sadly, more and more, I am seeing the comment "why would I want to go and visit Matrix?".

The forum community can't post idiotic comments in a public environment, and then get upset when people, often strangers, see it and leap to conclusions.

AoW is a good example of a necessity that is nevertheless not a location for saying ill chosen statements.

Everyone has a right to an opinion, but an outrageous statement or an offensive comment serves no one.

And it damages our reputation, colours people's opinion of our worth, and generally makes people think we are loud offensive jerks in some cases.

Censorship is such an ugly word. Banning people is something that is not a solution, just a result.

People need to realise, that having an opinion is one thing, how it is used is another, and if it is wielded like a club, then the person will just end up looking like a verbal brute.
I LIKE that my life bothers them,
Why should I be the only one bothered by it eh.

They should EVERY DAY. This happens because this behavior has been accepted up until this point. I read the threads over there, and have called a couple to the moderators attention, yet this crap continues. AoW should be no different than anywhere else. You can get your point across without that crap. I agreed with Ross' call, but think the second chance is ok, as long as rules are enforced from now on. For once, I agree with Les...:p

This is getting bad...

for a second straight day...I have to agree with Goblin!

:D ;) :p

AoW is notorious for some of the posts that show up in that sub-forum. And while no one wants to prevent people from having an opinion...or expressing it intelligently...there has to be guidelines and they need to be enforced.

Sure some of us (myself included) will use a "colorful word" or it's "proxy" for effect from time to time...but they are usually in humorous threads, meant for a laugh...and never intended as personal slurs or outright abuse towards anyone.

I agree that a stern warning should be the result of such first offenses...and bannings for any second such offense. There are times when people need to step back and think about what they are on the verge of typing/posting...and realize that even if outraged, their responses must fall within some framework of civility.

My deep strong feeling is that utter vulgarity and total insensitivity to others should always be banned, whatever the source.

We are not prudes. But there are limits as in most things in life as to what we can and cannot do.

There are things that should not be allowed on any forum. Common decency and common sense should rule the day.

AoW gives Matrix some place to arbitrarily turf rougher than normal threads.

But in the end, they are still there.

Now if a person has been with Matrix since day one, or just today, a code of conduct must apply fully to both, or it is a biased code of conduct.

I think we can all agree on that.

No amount of past good deeds can permit unacceptable breeches of common sense. A person should not be able to "buy" the right to offend based on being "one of the elite".

Some of our crowd have high post totals. This only signifies they have hit the send button a great many times.

Currently as a Mod at Wargamer, I am having the great pleasure of seeing if there is merit to a model based sub forum.
To aid in inserting images though, I am using as a source a thread stuck in a backwater here on Matrix.
But this will eventually inflate my Matrix post total (although I am unlikely to post near enough images to make a real difference).

We need to resolve, that Matrix will be a site with a level of class and style "or else".

I will gladly stand behind the management of Matrix in banning any member that obviously uses the site for behaviour that any intelligent thinking person will know is unacceptable.
That goes for ANY member. Personal reputation, time on the site and post contribution does not matter.
I LIKE that my life bothers them,
Why should I be the only one bothered by it eh.

I should have clarified my comment about Matix' filters: when the 'banning' occurred last night I happened to be in AoW and checked out the thread that Ross cited in his post. The filters failed to catch the 'word', so 'C U next Tuesday' (which since has been replaced with asterisks) was displayed...in the clear!

No blame to Matrix or the moderators; it was simply an oversight IMO.

The kind of behaviour you see in AoW is found all over the net without strict moderating. It seems that people don't put any restrictions on them selves, when any insult they can think of will go without retribution.

Where I live we have a few fenced in areas where dogs can run free (it's not allowed elsewhere in the city). It's quite usual that, even if the dogs are on friendly terms inside the area, they bark and grin to each other through the fence.

The fact that we humans seem to act the same way is a bit disturbing.

Unfortunately Bill, the problem with any of the "common" terms (decency, sense, courtesy, etc.) is that they aren't... Common, that is...

On the other hand, we in this forum show, through our words and actions, an uncommon commitment to such ideals as respect, fairness, and the rules of mature behavior. It is the way these ideals are strived for, and attained on a daily basis, that makes me proud to recognized by all of you, my peers, as a "member" here. Membership in a group can always be "claimed" by anyone who cares to go through the process of joining, but IMHO, true "membership" only happens when you are treated as such by the rest of the membership.

Are we here "elite"? No, we are not, but the way in which we react to each other, and to new members, does make us an exceptional group of people. Let us hope that, by example, we here can have a positive effect upon the other Matrix forums, and show them the right way to better communication and understanding.
What, me worry?
