Question regarding TF commanders...

Post by Apollo11 »

Hi all,

How much the rank plays the role when you select the TF commander?

When you pick up TF commander you get following values to choose from:

- leadership
- inspiration
- rank
- promising / very promising / competent / very competent
- cautious / careful/ aggressive / very aggressive
- surface ability
- carrier ability
- invasion ability

Also does anyone knows how all those values (see above) matter in combat
(i.e. can higher rank commander with less ability be better)?

I would think that, skill being equal, the LOWEST ranked commander would be the best. Lower rank means they probably graduated from the academy more recently and are more familiar with the ships and systems of the time. Most of the old guys were battleship admirals who couldn’t see the advantages of the airplane. Many were reluctant to trust radar for the same reason.

Of course, none of this probably makes a difference in the game. Just go with the guy who has the best skill and ignore rank.

I ignore rank too. the Captains seem to have very high ratings and I tend to use them when available. Of course I'll always pick Tanaka or Lee first.

Hi all,

Thanks "Drex" and " Yamamoto" - you exactly confirmed what I
suspected - i.e. that most people tend to ignore rank and
always go for leadership/inspiration (and described skill)...

But this is Gary Grigsby game and I don't think he "forgot"
something like this.

I have sneaky suspicion that rank does matter in combat...

do you read the rules?

The rules say to use senior officers who are cautious for TRANSPORTS and junior officers who are aggressive for surface raiders (like bombardment, fast transport, etc.)

It's ture if you don't count experience.:) I'm not sure why experience is not in the game. I mean for commanders not ships.

I distinctively remember that I read Matrox/2By3 posts when we discussed "Long
Lance" and other surface combat TF issues long ago.

They were mentioning the rank of commander but I can't find those exact posts.

This is why I keep asking the question in hope that Matrix/2By3 will answer... :-)

Hi all,

Another shameless BUMP...

I still hope that someone from Matrix/2By3 (programmer?) can answer this once
and for all...

BTW, anyone ever conducted tests with various commanders in surface combat?

Did it play any difference?
