Proposed Change - Fighter Intercept

Fury Games has now signed with Matrix Games, and we are working together on the next Strategic Command. Will use the Slitherine PBEM++ server for asynchronous multi-player.

Proposed Change - Fighter Intercept

Post by PvtBenjamin »

It is very popular now for the Axis player (Allied later in game) to send fighters first to no where on map until opponents fighter intercepts are exhausted then send Bomber to no fighter resistance. This is very unrealistic and I think there should be a change to intercept capabilities of fighters for more realism. I believe fighters should have two intercept options 1) intercept all 2) intercept bombers only.

Nothing against the people who use this tactic, its perfectly legal and I do it for time to time myself. Given the overwhelming air advantage of the Axis early the sending fighters first to wipe out fighter coverage should change for more parity.

The Wallies did that in the real war. It was called Fighter Sweeps.

Perhaps the better idea would be if a Fighter uses up it's 'Strike' ability (either attacking or performing such recon) that it can't escort that turn, and conversely if it escorts it can no longer Strike.

There are no escorts necessary all fighter intercepts are used up, with allied fighters going down 3-4 for every 1 Axis fighters go down.

So you think its realistic and represents the air war of WW2 that there are no fighters intercept on bombers just fighter intercepts of fighters going no where?

Later in the war, the US (and to a lesser extent English) fighters would fly over German Territory with the express purpose of just looking for/hunting German fighters.

I do agree to some extent. There are other things that are higher on my 'pet peeve' list though.

I send bombers first, as my fighters will escort them and cause enemy intercept losses. Then I send all the same fighters that escorted to attack enemy air units, causing further enemy losses. The I send Strats to hit resources which cripple enemy supply and economy. It works the same for both sides, if you don't have air superiority with good economy, you lose. That's like history.

If you really want to change something, give fighters one strike only instead of two ?

Fighters have 1 strike and 2 escorts.

Thanks, I couldn't really remember but knew someone would correct me. So now I have looked and it seems that they are different categories, so they can't be reduced to say, just one of either. I might have changed it to one only escort for 653N, but maybe they get two escorts or one escort with one strike ? I don't know.

In light of the time element involved for a SC turn, I was thinking that all units which still have a remaining AP could be allowed to reinforce.

Not sure whether that feature exists in the game code but it would definitely change the dynamics of sustaining an offensive campaign, especially in USSR where the Axis could use a little help.
