Pitaman (Axis) vs Tyronec (Soviet). All welcome.

Post by tyronec »

Sudden death, random weather, all else default.
AAR is running 3 turns behind.

So not sure what I am doing playing three games as Soviet in a row, not my preferred side. Hope to last more than 3 turns this time.

Am going to play a more balanced game than against S-T, will reinforce Pskov with a few units without compromising the defence elsewhere too much.

T1
Standard opening move.
Am able to open the L'Vov pocket for a turn, however nothing will escape.

Looks like you are planning on making a solid defense at Pskov - I see lots of troops in that area. Good luck in you new game.

AGN has advanced over the rough terrain between Pskov and Vitebsk. Isolate a couple of lead units and occupy as much rough terrain as I can.
AGC is up to Vitebsk, after trashing everything north of the Dvina. Put a few stacks in place to try and stop them crossing the river to get behind Vitebsk. Myunits on the frontline at the land bridge are weak.
AGS heading towards Kiev. Mass all my best units on the Dnepr below Kiev. If Axis move south to cross at Chergassy will be weak there. I escape form the Romanian front with just one more unit pocketed, though Southern Front may still be at risk this turn. Will see where the rest of PG1 appear next turn.

Not many attacks by Axis.
Hold the line at Pskov.
Retreat a hex around Velike Luki.
Hold the line in front of Smolensk, am concerned that am at risk of being pocketed here, just not sure how much there is waiting to attack.
Continue to fortify below Kiev and occupy some more of the Dnepr line.
Just leave 3 units in Odessa.
Am trying to extract more industry this game, so moving no armoured units by rail. Have disbanded a couple of tank divisions rather than rail them around.

The air war hots up, with Axis doing fighter sweeps and Soviets night bombing. 75 for 576.

Axis break the line at Pskov and pocket 7 divisions. Another couple are ZOC and may get caught next turn.
No attack at the landbridge, we pull back to Smolensk.
The Dnepr is crossed below Chergassy, Axis sneakily crossing where the defences are weak. Abandon the defence around Kiev and pull back. Somewhat disappointing, would have hoped to hold the river for another turn.
Air war. Between Axis fighter sweeps and Soviet night bombing has been a heavy turn, plus I got some fighter bases overrun around Pskov. 111 for 748.

No new units pocketed this turn.
Finland. Have 9 divisions holding the line up north, no attacks yet.
Leningrad. Axis panzers make an advance through the swamps. I leave a few units behind to inhibit supplies and fall back.
Moscow. Pushed back around Velike Luki. Just fall back along the line.
South. Odessa falls to the first attack, defenders are routed out. Make one attack against LAH which costs me 2.5k men but 9 wins chalked up. Elsewhere the retreat continues.
Have started building a line of forts in front of Moscow.
Air war. Continues to be bloody, 127 for 542 for the turn, mostly up north. Am just deploying my Tacs for the first time so will see if they get any targets next turn.

IDK what his fuel status is in the north...but he should be able to get a couple pockets if he uses his force right...thus thinning out your defenses there more before a final push on the leningrad...wouldnt have left that army+ on the south side of the river.

Leningrad. PG4 advances up to the river and almost cuts off several divisions. I counter attack to rout one motorised division and cut off another. Axis can probably pocket some units next turn but it should slow up their advance.
Moscow. Little combat, we continue to retreat.
South. PG1 makes some inroads towards Kharkov. I sacrifice a couple of units to cut off lead panzers.
Air war. Much as last turn. Using the Tacs doesn't work too well, they get shot down a lot more easily than LBs.

Up north the Finns make one attack and get across the river. Disappointing, in past games have held the line with 9 divisions against repeated attacks.
Leningrad. Axis make good progress, nothing cut off this turn but could lose about 10 divisions over the next couple of turns. I expect Leningrad will be isolated either T8 or T9.
Moscow. Steady advance, one Pz corps has disappeared so may be facing a pocket somewhere next turn.
South. Axis break through and advance 10 hexes. I counter attack and isolate the spearhead again. May cost a few units but hopefully some will get routed out. He has one Pz corps in reserve and have lost track of the other one.
Last of the L’Vov pocket surrenders.

Air war. They have stopped bombing my airfields but I lose lots of LBs to fighters during ground support. Will switch them to night only. Losses for the turn: 94 for 455.
The whole of the Luftwaffe is now supporting AGN.

Current version of the game the Germans "can not" afford to be cut off in 41. Playing the Germans you "have" to be cognitive of your flanks.

Finns continue to press forwards in the north.
Leningrad. 7 divisions cut off as expected. Hope there will not be a breakthrough next turn.
Moscow. Steady advance with one Pz corps. The other Pz corps appears further south and breaks through the front line. I isolate two Pz divisions but will probably get some cut off next turn.
South. 5 divisions pocketed as expected. All the rest of his Panzers are still down here so can expect a strong push for Stalino soon.

Air war. Continues much as last turn. 118 for 508 and Luftwaffe doing no ground support.

Mud in the central zone so AGN and AGS are held up, but not most of AGC.
Finns advance another hex up north.
I hold the line in front of Leningrad, risky as AGN will have more fuel next turn.
AGC advance a couple of hexes, am likely to lose a few units pocketed next turn from the southern Pz corps (they were saved by mud this time) and may take damage from the northern one too.
I pull back a couple of hexes from AGS fearing they will have built up more fuel and the infantry got closer.

Air war. The Luftwaffe is in the mud !. My LBs get 65 for 360 with night bombing and my Tacs kill about 1500 infantry. Most of the 109s are down to about half strength.

Flying night mission with 40 plane squadrons is counterproductive. I hope one-day German players wake up :). I hate seeing German planes get wasted needlessly flying night intercept missions with 40 planes squadrons.

wow thats the most mud I have seen in a game in ages.....you should have this game easily now. Since they messed with the weather system many patches ago mud became almost non-existent in the game lol.

Mud in one zone so far is not too extreme for random weather, and his main attack for AGC was outside it - so could easily have been worse.

T10 End of move.

Leningrad. Axis advance two hexes, the end is looking close. Am able to link up with what remains of my cut off divisions but they will not survive.
Get my first partisan strike just above Pskov, will not do much good there but better than nothing.

Moscow. In the north am taken by surprise and the panzer corps heads towards Kalinin. I counter attack against the cavalry to ZOC their supply.
The southern pincer makes a loose pocket of 3 stacks of units rather than making a secure pocket of less. I duly cut off the panzers but it is going to cost me next turn.

Stalino. Have nearly all my industry out. Expect there will be a right hook or a left hook and will have to withdraw next turn or the one after. Haven’t built any entrenchment south of Stalino which is not good. Axis also leave me three Romanian cav to attack, one does quite a lot of damage !

Air war. 63 for 302. Axis did a lot of bombing around Leningrad without my fighters reacting, have them a bit closer this move
